TWISTED TRUNK
In a figure with a twist in the spine, the back muscles, hips and glutes are used, and twisting stretches muscles in other parts of the body too. The iliocostalis muscles help us to bend backwards and rotate around our spinal column, but these muscles are very deep within the body and are not visible as surface anatomy. All twisting poses connect the lower and upper parts of the skeleton in order to rotate the axial skeleton (which includes the spine and torso).
