Silvia woke to the robust aroma of dark roast. She blinked against the sunlight streaming in through her windows. She’d never slept long enough to be awakened with the bright natural light, so she tapped her phone to see the time.

The sudden movement and the combined scent of coffee and something cooking in the kitchen had her stomach instantly revolting.

She tore off the covers and dashed to her en suite bathroom just in time. Sweat dampened her forehead, and a wave of heat overcame her. Stripping off Nick’s T-shirt, which she’d slept in, Silvia welcomed the coolness of the bathroom floor tile.

When she felt confident enough that she wasn’t going to be sick again, she sank back on her heels and closed her eyes. Silvia pulled in a deep breath and concentrated on her breathing and waited for the rest of the queasiness to pass. Something would have to be done about those smells.

With a groan, Silvia started to get up, but her legs were weak and she was pretty sure the room was spinning again. She closed her eyes just as heavy footsteps sounded down the hall and entered the bedroom.

Not the morning-after look she’d been going for, but there wasn’t much she could do about that now. Apparently, morning sickness was ready to make an appearance at this stage of her pregnancy.

“Silvia.” Nick rounded the door frame and stilled. “What can I do?”

She held on to the edge of the sink and shook her head. “Nothing. It will pass, but whatever you’re making has to go. I’m sorry.”

“Consider it done.”

He disappeared, and she was thankful he didn’t hang around and insist on helping her. She really wanted to wash her face and brush her teeth alone, and if she was going to get sick again, she truly didn’t want an audience.

Thankfully, he left her alone, and Silvia managed to grab a quick shower.

Once she was feeling somewhat human again, Silvia tugged his T-shirt back on and pulled her hair up on top of her head. Silvia padded out into the living area and found her doors and windows open and no sign of the food.

Nick rested a hip against the island and held a cup of coffee. “Water or juice?”

“I can get it,” she told him as she moved into the kitchen. “What had you made?”

“French toast. It’s in the trash, and I took it outside.”

Her stomach grumbled, but there was no way she could put anything heavy in there right now. She reached for the bread and popped a slice in the toaster. Bland and blah would likely become her new diet for the foreseeable future.

“I appreciate you making me breakfast,” she told him as she turned to face him. “But listen—”

“Regrets already?” he asked, taking a sip of his coffee like he hadn’t a care in the world. “I really thought we were past that.”

Silvia gritted her teeth. “No, not regrets. I just think we need to not kid ourselves and think that we can play house.
