Sure enough, there was the gas station, as she had said, and next to it with a car park in front and around the side was the diner she told him about.

She steered the car onto the car park and around the side parking at the farthest spot available. She got out, checking to see if there were any cameras watching them.

“Keep an eye out for anyone leaving the diner. I’ll jack this one,” she said.

Jack pushed Franklin against the side of the SUV she was working on and he kept a watch on the front of the diner while keeping a hand firmly against Franklin’s chest so he didn’t move.

She had the door open in a flash and was soon working on hotwiring the engine. There were a few newer models in the car park, but they all used keyless entry key fobs and were harder to hotwire. This was an older model which she had ticking over in seconds.

As he climbed in alongside her in the front, Jack asked, “Misspent youth, or did they teach you that at the DEA?”

With a smile, she said, “The former.”

Franklin had been forced into the space behind the front two seats and was clearly uncomfortable and began to moan until Jack turned to stare at him.

He soon quietened down after that, and they drove off the car park and onto the freeway once more.

Jack reached for his phone and called London. He was put through to Tony in a second and was soon giving him a full sit-rep. Tony’s reaction was the same as his own upon hearing the details of Franklin’s scheme. “This is too important not to involve the boss in it. Hang on, and I’ll patch him through,” Tony said. A few moments later, Bennett came on the line after Tony had filled him in.

Bennett said, “You need to get to Miami fast and do what you can to prevent those drones from taking off and delivering their payload. In the meantime, I’ll get onto the DEA and instruct them on what we’ve learned. I’ll also contact the other security services around the world to be on the lookout for this drone army. We need their locations, so see if you can find a database that has them all listed. We have to get the authorities in the various countries alerted to this threat. Be warned though, Jack, until I can persuade the DEA otherwise, I’m afraid that Agent Parker is still a person of interest according to the report filed by her agent in charge, Bill Harper. It’s clear he is covering his own backside over this, and he may even be complicit in Moya’s operation as well, so the both of you tread extremely carefully. We can’t afford any slip-ups at this late stage in the game.”

“Copy that, sir,” Jack replied.

“I don’t have to tell you what’s riding on this, Jack, millions of lives are at stake here, and we can’t take for granted that Franklin’s drug won’t affect normal people either, so this has to be stopped.
