We don’t really mean it of course, but it was an expression of there being things for us all to look forward to. Of pleasure in one another’s company and planning for the future.

We give back the hire car, climb onto the plane, and fly home with our batteries recharged. Martha has photographs of our road trip made up into two albums, one for Rosie and one for Ma, for Christmas. A memento of our four days in Belfast.

Two weeks later, her spirits revived, Ma books herself onto a river cruise on the Rhine with an old friend. Job done, I thought. This is her new normal.
