Chapter Six

“James.”

James looked up. A young man wearing a sheriff’s badge was walking towards him, his horse tied to a post outside the main house. He gave James a wave before taking off his Stetson and fanning it in front of his face.

James laughed as he vaulted the paddock fence. “Come on, Chris. You can’t be that hot.”

“It feels real hot to me,” Chris Foster grumbled. “Why don’t we get snow for once?”

“Because we chose to live in an area where snow doesn’t seem to exist.” James leaned against the fence as his younger brother approached. “You moan about it every year.”

Chris scowled at him, wiping the sweat from his forehead before putting his Stetson back over his sweat-soaked dark hair. He was just like their mother; she had always wanted a white Christmas. They had had snow a few times in the past, but the recent years had been hotter and hotter. James could feel the sweat trickling down his back, but he wasn’t complaining. He could live with it. Just.

“What are you doing up here, anyway? Is it about Dominic Growcott?”

“Essentially. Morgan wasn’t going to press any charges, we’ll just let him cool off in the cells for a bit.” Chris shrugged. “I gave him two hours to sit and think about it before letting him go. I just thought I’d come and warn Amy.”

James scowled.

“I was hoping for something a bit more than that. Can’t we get him to leave Jefferson City?”

“You mean to run him out of town? I know there are a lot of people who witnessed what he did who would like to see him go, but it’s not something I can do myself.” Chris shrugged. “He made a lot of enemies even without asking all these intrusive questions and making comments about lifestyle out here that put everyone’s backs up.”

James was still wondering how Growcott even found out where Amy was. Amy had told him she had told family members who hated her father where she had gone and she had covered her tracks. It had to be one of them. James was a bit more skeptical than Amy and believed one of her family members had either been threatened or had a change of heart and let Growcott know of his daughter’s whereabouts.

It infuriated him. How could anyone think what he had planned to do was acceptable? Then again, wasn’t that what their own father was doing? Maybe not for monetary gain, but he was trying to force marriages. Maybe Dominic Growcott and Arnold Foster were more alike than James realized.

“What are we going to do about him?” James glanced towards the house. “I won’t let him on my property and I won’t let Amy out of my sight. He’ll snatch her the moment he gets the chance… if he catches her alone… I dread to think what could happen.”

“I’ll keep an eye on him. He’s currently staying at Maria Brooks’s boarding house.” Chris shook his head. “While Maria can take care of herself, I know she’s already fed up with him.
