Chapter Six
âJames.â
James looked up. A young man wearing a sheriffâs badge was walking towards him, his horse tied to a post outside the main house. He gave James a wave before taking off his Stetson and fanning it in front of his face.
James laughed as he vaulted the paddock fence. âCome on, Chris. You canât be that hot.â
âIt feels real hot to me,â Chris Foster grumbled. âWhy donât we get snow for once?â
âBecause we chose to live in an area where snow doesnât seem to exist.â James leaned against the fence as his younger brother approached. âYou moan about it every year.â
Chris scowled at him, wiping the sweat from his forehead before putting his Stetson back over his sweat-soaked dark hair. He was just like their mother; she had always wanted a white Christmas. They had had snow a few times in the past, but the recent years had been hotter and hotter. James could feel the sweat trickling down his back, but he wasnât complaining. He could live with it. Just.
âWhat are you doing up here, anyway? Is it about Dominic Growcott?â
âEssentially. Morgan wasnât going to press any charges, weâll just let him cool off in the cells for a bit.â Chris shrugged. âI gave him two hours to sit and think about it before letting him go. I just thought Iâd come and warn Amy.â
James scowled.
âI was hoping for something a bit more than that. Canât we get him to leave Jefferson City?â
âYou mean to run him out of town? I know there are a lot of people who witnessed what he did who would like to see him go, but itâs not something I can do myself.â Chris shrugged. âHe made a lot of enemies even without asking all these intrusive questions and making comments about lifestyle out here that put everyoneâs backs up.â
James was still wondering how Growcott even found out where Amy was. Amy had told him she had told family members who hated her father where she had gone and she had covered her tracks. It had to be one of them. James was a bit more skeptical than Amy and believed one of her family members had either been threatened or had a change of heart and let Growcott know of his daughterâs whereabouts.
It infuriated him. How could anyone think what he had planned to do was acceptable? Then again, wasnât that what their own father was doing? Maybe not for monetary gain, but he was trying to force marriages. Maybe Dominic Growcott and Arnold Foster were more alike than James realized.
âWhat are we going to do about him?â James glanced towards the house. âI wonât let him on my property and I wonât let Amy out of my sight. Heâll snatch her the moment he gets the chance⦠if he catches her alone⦠I dread to think what could happen.â
âIâll keep an eye on him. Heâs currently staying at Maria Brooksâs boarding house.â Chris shook his head. âWhile Maria can take care of herself, I know sheâs already fed up with him.
