Chapter 11

Early the next morning after Mary Jane's engagement she woke to storm clouds gathering in the north. She didn't care, she needed to get outside, she needed to walk to try to think her way through this latest fiasco that her father was making worse.

Taking her coat, wrapping a scarf around her neck along with her hat and gloves, Mary Jane went out into the predawn hours just as the sun was peeking over the horizon. The dark clouds to the north were in sharp contrast to the pale pinks and blues of the sky to the east and south. Looking at the sunrise, Mary Jane felt she could still get back in time to make it to the school to work with the young kids as they prepared for the holiday pageant.

As the story was unfolding now, not only were her hands tied but her lips also. She felt as if she were drowning and had no way to swim to shore.

Step after step Mary Jane moved away from the cabin toward the open space to the west. If she could she'd walk to the mountain and hide among its forested peaks. However, those mountains were too far away. So, with no specific destination in mind, she was just walking, answering the need to get away. She thought of the children and the upcoming event. She thought of Homer and his recitation of the paper he wrote. And Mason, the young man who had been helping Amos, and his presentation of the Declaration of Independence and what it meant to him. She smiled when she thought of the four young beginning students and the excitement they had in singing. She was finding the students meant a great deal to her.

Lee Terry was a good teacher. It wasn't like he was all bad, yet, there was something else going on, something she could not put her finger on. What would her life be like if she ended up having to marry the man? Would she have the home and children she wanted?

She felt the sun's rays hitting her back as it rose higher in the sky. It signaled that she needed to turn around return to the cabin and prepare for the upcoming day. She hoped she could keep up appearances but her stomach was in knots and her heart heavy.

“Just a few more minutes," Mary Jane whispered to herself. There was something about the silence of the open prairie that spoke to her. It was a place where she didn't feel judged, didn't feel like she had to keep up appearances, she could just be who she needed to be at that moment.

She was about to turn back when she caught the faint scent of smoke. The smell sent a quiver of fear through her. They hadn't had much moisture this year. If they had a prairie fire, it could be catastrophic.

She moved forward following what she thought was the direction the smoke was coming from. She saw no wall of flames but that could mean it had just gotten started.
