His convalescence at the encampment continues unabated under the watchful eyes of his four hosts for almost three weeks until he is feeling strong again. In fact, he feels so good as he knows that he has a second lease on life. Like he is reborn.
One night he makes an announcement to the fellows.
âLads, I want to go to work with you. I could work for a while and pay you back for all that youâve done for the likes of me and then take my leave. Do you think that it is possible for me to get some work on the bridge there?â
Daniel Sean is greeted with total silence. The four of them look at one another until Joseph speaks up.
âLooky here now Daniel, you been a lot of help here, keeping the place clean, helping cooking dinner, and helping us to learn to read every night. âBut we canât be bringing a white man on down to the bridge. The boss man wouldnât be happy to see us mingling together, no suh!â
The other three nod their heads and voice their agreement.
âWouldnât set right with none of them,â Joseph continues. âWe keep our mouths shut and do the work, donât even socialize at all with them white boys on the job. We the only colored folk on the bridge.â
Daniel Sean thinks for a bit.
âWhat if I just show up looking for a job, pretending that I donât know you lads? You think that might work?â
Jubal thinks for a minute.
âI heard the boss man saying to another higher up that they be needing a couple more laborers. But I also heard him say that he didnât want to be hiring any more Coloreds or any of you Irish. He donât like you Irishers, especially if you be one of them Catholics. Thatâs what I heard him tell another of the foremanâs out there on the job.â
