Ethan’s plan to take Parker out on a date was apparently the best thing he could have possibly done. They were only at The Sand Bar, but she was practically bouncing in her seat in complete excitement.

“Do you want to get a couple of appetizers?” he asked.

“Oh my goodness! Yes!” Her smile was dazzling and it seemed a little much for a casual dinner out.

“Um…are you okay?”

Her smile faded slightly and he heard her sigh. “I know it’s silly, but it’s been a really long time since anyone’s taken me out. The last time I went out to eat with anyone was with…” She paused and for the barest of moments looked a little sad. “It was with Tyler before…well…you know.”

Ah. The infamous Tyler.

Ethan remembered the guy because they’d all gone to school together, but it still irked him a little whenever Parker mentioned him. Not because he was jealous, but because the relationship had meant so much to her and now it only made her sad. Sometimes he considered looking Tyler up on social media and reaching out to him, but he thought that would possibly be crossing a line.

Now, when he glanced over at her, she was practically hiding behind the menu.

And this is why I don’t date more often…

“If it makes you feel any better,” he said, getting her attention, “it’s been a while for me too. I can’t remember the last time I actually ate out someplace. Usually I call in an order and take it home. And it’s been even longer since I’ve been here.” He looked down at the menu. “What’s your favorite appetizer?”

And just as he hoped, that seemed to perk her up a bit.

This girl and her food…

“Their tot-nachos are legendary,” she explained. “But the everything bagel seasoned tempura shrimp on a stick are my favorite!”

“Then let’s get both!” he suggested and watched her eyes light up. After that, they seemed back on track and talked about food and some of their favorite places to eat around Magnolia. “My dad and I used to go to the Mystic Magnolia after it was renovated. I can’t believe your brother was responsible for that.”

She nodded. “It was a wild time, for sure. Mason really took charge with the whole project and my sister handled redoing the menu.” Then she shrugged. “Apparently there’s nothing two overachievers can’t do.”

It was said lightly, but he knew her feelings on the subject. He was about to comment on it when their waitress came and took their orders. When they were done, Ethan reached across the table and took her hand. “I’m going to say something, and I don’t want you to get upset.”

“Ethan…” she whined.

“Just…hear me out.” He paused and waited until he knew she was listening. “Just like you don’t like people labeling you because of who you are, maybe you should try to…you know…stop labeling them too. For all you know, they feel the need to overachieve because of some deep-seated issue of their own. Everyone
