“Gimme all the damn money. Let’s go!”

Penelope pressed her face closer to the floor, practically kissing it as the man shouted at the teller behind the counter.

“Dude, hurry it up. I hear sirens,” another man said from behind her, closer to the exit.

Of all the days she had to stop at the bank for cash, it had to be today. She should’ve just paid the ATM fee and grabbed the money she needed right next to her office building. Because then she wouldn’t be lying face down on the ground in the middle of a bank robbery.

“Hurry it up, bitch. Did you hear my brother?”

She squeezed her eyes shut tighter when the teller screamed. Part of her wanted to lift her head and find out why she screamed. But the smart part of her kept her eyes closed and her head down.

The second the men burst into the building brandishing their weapons, hollering for everyone to get down on the floor, she complied. She wasn’t an idiot. They went person to person, about five to ten people in the lobby, grabbing their phones and shoving them all into a nylon bag. Then one went to the young teller behind the counter—she had to only be in her early twenties—and demanded she empty her cash register. The other stood near the exit keeping an eye out.

She’d seen so many cases in law school where it didn’t end well for the victims, and she knew better than to try anything stupid. It’s why she chose corporate law instead of criminal law. She didn’t have the ferocity to deal with criminals.

Suddenly, a sharp ache tore through her head when a rough hand grabbed a handful of hair and yanked her to her feet. She let out a cry of terror.

“You have five seconds to finish up with all the money, or I blow this chick’s brains out. Do you hear me?” the man yelled as he pressed a gun to the side of her head.

The cold metal from the gun sent a shiver down her spine so strong and fierce, she was afraid she may pass out.

The man jerked her hard against his frame. “Don’t move, bitch. The gun might go off.”

Biting her lip hard enough that she tasted blood, she tried to hold herself as steady as possible. She knew the man meant business. He wasn’t joking around.

“Five. Four. Three. Two…” The pressure from the gun intensified, and a tiny squeak left her mouth. “Do you hear that, lady? This woman doesn’t want to die. Are you finished?”

Although she was standing up, free to see everything going around her, she had yet to open her eyes. She was too terrified to look.

In that chaotic moment, her mind conjured one thing—the only thing she wanted to see before she died.

Ethan McCord.

No matter how much time passed, he was always in her thoughts, in her heart. She had so many regrets. One of them being—

“Shit, man. She dropped a bunch on the floor,” the brother said, standing near the counter.
