Acknowledgments

The list of people who were instrumental in the creation of this novel once again starts with my editor, Judy Gitenstein, whose deep knowledge of the art and science of storytelling helped make this book possible.

Christopher Caines returned as my copyeditor, ensuring the fitness and accuracy of my words. His sense of humor and extensive knowledge of basketball were an added bonus.

Marco Pavia, my kind and generous book producer, returned to handle design and production chores. He may well be the most level-headed creative person I know.

Tabitha Lahr (cover designer), Brent Wilcox (interior page designer), and Sara Dyck, Cecile Garcia, and Kammy Wood (proofreaders) came back to apply their considerable talents.

I am blessed to have such an awesome group of dedicated beta readers, namely Hailey Star Dowthwaite, Sam Hertzog, Santos Rodriguez, Megan Walker, and Drew Weschler.

U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Joshua J. Cullins of the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Pendleton, California, died on October 19, 2010, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom. Staff Sergeant Cullins served as the model for Wade Archer, older brother of Zeke, the book’s protagonist.

U.S. Marine Corps Captain and Executive Officer Juan F. Rodriguez of the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company—whom I met at a street dedication in Los Angeles for Staff Sergeant Cullins—lent his expertise as my military advisor.

I had the good fortune to spend time with Fr. Robert W. Hale, O.S.B. Cam., of the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, California, to discuss the merits and challenges of leading a righteous life. Fr. Robert’s wisdom can be found throughout these pages.

Bob Conroy, engineering faculty member emeritus from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, returned to assist with the mathematical and scientific aspects of the book.

Roger J. Couture, author of Surfing with Snakes & Dragons, served as my trusted surfing advisor.

Chef Wills Carter and Katherine A. Bloxsom-Carter, the proprietors of The Canyon Villa in Paso Robles, California, shared their take on the ethereal art of breadmaking, which led to the recipe for Nathan Freeman’s grandmother’s baked-bread chess pieces.

I read a series of books that helped to shape my creation of the inter-dimensional energy being I named the 7th Dimension. The list includes A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, Life After Death and Unseen Forces by Dr. Robert Davis, An End to Upside Down Thinking by Mark Gober, Wholeness and the Implicate Order by David Bohm, Synchronized Universe: New Science of the Paranormal by Claude Swanson, Cosmos by Carl Sagan, and Fearless Intelligence by Michael Benner.

Curtis Marsh, KU Endowment Associate Development Director, provided behind-the-scenes access to Allen Fieldhouse as well as encouragement and historical insight into the University of Kansas basketball program.

Brian Minkoff lent his knowledge of regional sub-dialects of the English Midlands. Nathan Jones offered assistance with the Welsh language.

Jon Haim of Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in Los Angeles assisted with Wade Archer’s funeral service particulars.

I’m grateful to the numerous book clubs across the
