Chapter 11
âI canât believe how fast time has flown. Tomorrowâs the day. Are you sure you brought everything? The new shirt, slacks, shoesââ
âNo matter how many times you ask the answer will still be âyesâ.â San Antonio was a couple of hours away and they were about halfway into the drive and sheâd already asked the same question three times.
âSorry. I guess Iâm just nervous. I havenât danced in front of an audience in years. I promise not to ask again.â She pulled her knees up against her chest. âThank you for grabbing the hotel room.â
âNo problem. You sure youâre okay with sharing a double room?â He didnât mind one bit, but he wanted to be a gentleman. Heâd decided once the competition was over heâd reveal his feelingsâput everything on the table.
âI donât mind. Most places are probably booked solid because of the competitionâ
âHow big will it be?â
She gave a slight shrug. âI really donât know. There are several different categories.â
âSo how can they afford to give a whopping cash prize.â
âWith entry fees, sponsorships, spectator fees, merch sales, you name it, the event is a success each year.â
âWhy did you stop dancing? I remember how good you were.â
âI guess I loved barrel racing more. To get to where I was I spent a lot of time on the back of my horse. Something had to give. Sometimes the best choices donât always feel good but in the end thatâs what had to happen.â
âYouâre a fighter, Mags. You can get through anything life throws at you.â
Slumping her shoulders caused the straps of her shirt to fall down. She didnât bother fixing them. âI hope youâre right, Blue. This is my only hope.â
He wanted to tell her that Justin Noble had said heâd take the case, but if things went sour Blue didnât want her to be disappointed. Noble was a damn good attorney, but he didnât make any promises that he could get Jack out on a reduced sentence. Sometimes it came down to the judge on the bench, or the jury. Since the crime happened near the border, it became more serious.
âWeâll do this together.â
âSoâ¦â She shifted in the seat to look at his profile. âWhere did you tell your family that youâre going?â
After a reasonable hesitation, he said, âI didnât tell them anything.â
âWaitâ¦you just left without telling them youâll be gone?â
âIâm an adult and Iâm free to leave. What did you tell your mom?â He rolled up the windows and flipped on the AC so he could hear her talk.
âI told her that I was going to a work thing, but I didnât go into detail. I didnât want to get her hopes up and have them crushed if we donât win.â
Blue couldnât imagine so much riding on a dance. And yet he did feel the pressure too.
*
Theyâd finally arrived in San Antonio, checked into their room, and carried in their bags. While Maggie went to freshen up, Blue stretched out on one of the beds.
âIâm starving,â she said when she stepped out of the bathroom.
