Chapter 11

“I can’t believe how fast time has flown. Tomorrow’s the day. Are you sure you brought everything? The new shirt, slacks, shoes—”

“No matter how many times you ask the answer will still be ‘yes’.” San Antonio was a couple of hours away and they were about halfway into the drive and she’d already asked the same question three times.

“Sorry. I guess I’m just nervous. I haven’t danced in front of an audience in years. I promise not to ask again.” She pulled her knees up against her chest. “Thank you for grabbing the hotel room.”

“No problem. You sure you’re okay with sharing a double room?” He didn’t mind one bit, but he wanted to be a gentleman. He’d decided once the competition was over he’d reveal his feelings—put everything on the table.

“I don’t mind. Most places are probably booked solid because of the competition”

“How big will it be?”

She gave a slight shrug. “I really don’t know. There are several different categories.”

“So how can they afford to give a whopping cash prize.”

“With entry fees, sponsorships, spectator fees, merch sales, you name it, the event is a success each year.”

“Why did you stop dancing? I remember how good you were.”

“I guess I loved barrel racing more. To get to where I was I spent a lot of time on the back of my horse. Something had to give. Sometimes the best choices don’t always feel good but in the end that’s what had to happen.”

“You’re a fighter, Mags. You can get through anything life throws at you.”

Slumping her shoulders caused the straps of her shirt to fall down. She didn’t bother fixing them. “I hope you’re right, Blue. This is my only hope.”

He wanted to tell her that Justin Noble had said he’d take the case, but if things went sour Blue didn’t want her to be disappointed. Noble was a damn good attorney, but he didn’t make any promises that he could get Jack out on a reduced sentence. Sometimes it came down to the judge on the bench, or the jury. Since the crime happened near the border, it became more serious.

“We’ll do this together.”

“So…” She shifted in the seat to look at his profile. “Where did you tell your family that you’re going?”

After a reasonable hesitation, he said, “I didn’t tell them anything.”

“Wait…you just left without telling them you’ll be gone?”

“I’m an adult and I’m free to leave. What did you tell your mom?” He rolled up the windows and flipped on the AC so he could hear her talk.

“I told her that I was going to a work thing, but I didn’t go into detail. I didn’t want to get her hopes up and have them crushed if we don’t win.”

Blue couldn’t imagine so much riding on a dance. And yet he did feel the pressure too.

They’d finally arrived in San Antonio, checked into their room, and carried in their bags. While Maggie went to freshen up, Blue stretched out on one of the beds.

“I’m starving,” she said when she stepped out of the bathroom.
