Chapter Twelve

I’ve seen a lot of shit in my life so far. I’ve done a lot of shit that would make even the toughest guys in the room squirm. Nothing has ever shaken me though. Not until I read what was in the file my father insisted I look over.

It was a workup on Cassidy. I expected it was coming. I know my family. They don’t trust outsiders, and the minute I finally showed an interest in a girl, I knew they’d be looking into her past, digging up everything they possibly could.

I was prepared to read about her boring, middle-class upbringing. She said she’d been an only child with no cousins. That much was true. And for the most part, up until the last year, her life was that typical American girl story. No red flags. No dark family secrets. Until she and her best friend were drugged and raped. Side by side. In the same room.

Two months after the attack, the other girl took her own life. And the day of the funeral, the two guys responsible got released on bail. It was also the same day they each ended up with a chest full of bullets. That wasn’t all, though. No, they had their dicks cut off postmortem. Their bodies were found with a palm clutching each other’s severed organs.

I don’t have any proof, but I have a strong feeling that Cassidy pulled that trigger. Not sure how I know that, but I saw the rage in her eyes that night of the party. I saw how much further she wanted to go, how much more pain she wanted to inflict on that asshole who tried to drug her.

She’d said the words never again. Now I know what she meant.

I read every page of that report, and right after, I ran to the bathroom in my father’s office and threw up the contents of my stomach. Nothing has ever made me sick before, but knowing what happened to her… After that, I wasn’t just sick. I was so full of rage my father and Zio Matteo had to hold me back from leaving the house. I wanted blood. I didn’t care whose it was. Anyone’s would have done.

It took hours for Pops to talk me off the edge. I’m barely hanging on by a thread now. Having Cassidy in my arms is calming in an odd way, though. Even with all the secrets still wrapped around us.

I’ve never uttered the words I’m about to say out loud to anyone who wasn’t blood. But in order to get her to trust me, I know I need to give her what she wants. “My father is the Don of the Valentino Crime Family. My Zio Luca is his underboss until I’m ready to take that spot. I’m a made man, Cassidy. We’re… well, I think you get the point,” I whisper.

“I killed the men who raped me and my best friend. I killed them because what they did killed her,” Cassidy tells me.
