CHAPTER 36

After a fifteen-minute walk, Jack and Deb somehow made it to Grand Central Station. The bottles of wine had left both of them giddy and uncoordinated. The crosstown stroll had been filled with stumbles and giggles, and at least one near-miss encounter with a truck driver who clearly had the right of way.

They arrived at the platform of Track 23, where the 10:06 express would soon depart for Stamford. She stopped in her tracks. “Okay, bucko, this is the end of the escort.”

He turned to face her. Without thinking, he reached down to grab her hand and hold it in his. “Happy birthday,” he said. “I had a really great night.”

She offered a meek smile.

“What’s with the long face?” After a moment of silence, he prodded again. “Come on, what’s wrong?”

He watched with elation as her look of sadness softened into a seductive smile.

“I’m just bummed that you didn’t make the traffic light that day,” she said, squeezing his hand. “Who knows what could have happened.”

She loosened her grip as if about to slip her fingers from his but then retook his hand and clenched it more firmly than before. “Actually, there’s one other thing I’m really bummed about.”

She leaned in closer, as if prepared to reveal her life’s ultimate secret. He felt a few stray curls of her hair brush against his ear as she closed in on him, her telltale scent of lemon and flowers radiating from her neck. “Yes,” she whispered, “one big bummer.”

Before he knew what was happening, he felt her lips upon his. They were warm and soft, and just as he closed his eyes and kissed her back, the warmth was gone.

He opened his eyes to see that he was still leaning forward while she was once again standing perfectly upright. He was speechless, aroused beyond words. As he struggled to regain his composure, a mischievous smile crossed her face. “You’re not really going to get on that train right now, are you?”

“I’ve got to get home. I really need to—”

He was interrupted by her lips against his. This time she didn’t stop when he kissed her back. His head pounded from the wine as his heart pounded with excitement. He wrapped his arm around her waist, balling a handful of her skirt into his hand and pulling her closer, driving his lips and tongue against hers.

“I really need to get home,” he repeated as they paused for air. “This is wrong.”

“Yes, terribly wrong,” she said, running her hand all the way up the inseam of his pants. “Oh yeah, I can tell you’re hating this.”

“You know I have to go—”

She interrupted him by planting one last kiss on his lips.

“Yes, I know you have to go. I get it.” She ran her hand down the sleeve of his suit jacket before pulling it away. “Have a good trip home,” she added curtly before turning away from him and walking back toward the station.

“Hey, are you mad at me?” he called after her.

She turned back to face him and flashed a broad smile.
