âBeing on Van Goghâs turf has obviously inspired you,â Fiona said to Julia.
âThe sunflowers were my fatherâs idea,â Julia said.
Fiona handed the flowers back to Julia. âI feel betterâgroggy as hell, but better,â she said. âWould you mind asking one of the nurses for a vase?â
Julia took the flowers, left the room. From under the sheets, tubes ran to plastic pouches, and a dripâglucose? morphine?âran from Fionaâs left wrist to a bag of clear liquid that hung from an IV pole.
âSheâs lovely, Saulâand itâs apparent how much she adores you,â Fiona said. âBut then, who wouldnât?â She took his hand. âYou were wonderful yesterday.â
âJust doing my job,â Saul said. âYouâre the one whoâs wonderful.â
âThis is the first time Iâve met one of your children, so I can see why you alwaysâ¦â She wiped at her eyes with the back of her wrist. âForgive meâIâm sorry for losing it this way, but since I woke from surgery, Iâve been highly emotionalâ¦â
âUnlike the way you usually are, right?â
âWhat I thought about first thing when I woke, was that it was a good idea to visit you,â Fiona said. âIf Iâd been by myself, Iâd probably be dead by now.â
âNot true.â
âTake some credit. I mean, think of it this wayâyouâve probably added months to my life.â She laughed. âIt would be sheer hell to have my family around now, my mother clucking over what a shame it was that I was going to die without having given her grandchildren, or my sistersâ¦â
âShh,â Saul said. âDonât.â
Julia returned, set the vase of sunflowers on a window sill. âWhen youâre discharged, would you like to visit Saint Paul de Mausole?â she asked. âI could show you Van Goghâs room, though itâs not clear that the room they say was his was actually his. But from the window you can see what he saw when he painted. Itâs still pretty much the same: a wheat field, a stone wall enclosure, cypress trees, hills.â
âIâd love to,â Fiona said.
âWhile he was there he tried to kill himself by drinking lamp oil and sucking the paint out of tubes,â Julia said.
âDo you like the taste of paint?â Fiona asked
âHavenât tried it yet.â
âIâm a lawyer, by the way,â Julia said.
âIâm sorryââ Fiona said âânot that youâre a lawyer, but that Iâm a bit out of it. Your father told me you were a lawyer, that you went to Columbia Law School, that you clerked for a judge in D.C., that you were slated to become a partner in one of those old New York white shoe law firms, but why are you hereâ?â
âI took an extended leave of absence.â
âHeyâso did Iâand so did your father!â Fiona said. âSee? I knew we had lots in common. What we donât have in common, though, me and your father, is that Iâve never been known for being diplomatic. So I was wondering why you came here. Why Saint Rémy?â
âIâm here because Iâm pregnant,â Julia said. âAnd because I read Van Goghâs lettersâthe ones he wrote to his brother.
