Ess sat bolt upright in bed, clutching the blanket like a shield. Her ears strained to detect a repeat of the noise she thought she’d heard—someone tapping on the cabin door. All she could hear now were seagulls squawking overhead, but she pictured a figure skulking on deck, looking for a way in.

Her tablet dinged, the sound bouncing off the cabin walls. Catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror, huddled under a sheet in fear, Ess hung her head and got out of bed. She slipped into her boat shoes, grabbed the screwdriver from under her pillow, and went into the main cabin to check the door. Secure. With only a slight hesitation, she unlocked it and yanked it open. The morning sun fell across her, but nothing else. On deck she turned in a circle, confirmed she was totally alone. It was just her brain trying to do her in.

Tossing the screwdriver on the table inside, she picked up her tablet and saw Yori’s message:
