Chapter 14

Greg’s body hummed as he walked into his office building. He’d been hard-pressed to let Zoe leave for the mansion a short while ago. He’d wanted to go with her but knew it was a risk they couldn’t take if they were seen. He was the driver and would have no reason to be seen around the property this late at night.

As much as he wanted to protect her, he trusted Zoe to look after herself. She had said she’d snuck in and out more than once. Though now there were increased guards. Still, bottom line, he had to trust her. He couldn’t hover over her like a mother hen trying to protect her all the time.

It was close to midnight and he should be thinking about sleep, but he needed to check in and tell Luke the latest developments. They had never had to join forces with other law enforcement. The general wasn’t going to like this. In fact, he may pull them. Not that Greg had any intention of going anywhere. Zoe needed backup. Her people couldn’t get close enough to the mansion to help her if she were ever in a crisis. He could. He wasn’t going to abandon her.

Greg wasn’t surprised to find Luke and Shay here. Luke was always here and now that he had Shay in his life, she was never far away. He probably kept her here to keep a close eye on her. Not because he was afraid she’d be kidnapped again, but because he liked keeping her close and safe. Shay didn’t seem to mind. She was also a huge help to them with her development law knowledge. She had helped solve the case for them a few weeks back when she’d cracked the anagram of a crime boss’s name attached to a title of property.

The two were huddled up at his desk looking at a computer screen. Shay was pointing to things and talking softly. Luke nodded along.

Shay said looking up at his approach, a grin on her face. “Hey, Greg.”

“Hey, Shay.” He returned her grin as he took a seat across from Luke’s desk. “Luke.” He nodded.

Luke eyed him warily. He knew this wasn’t a social call. “Report.” He didn’t bother sending Shay away. She pretty much knew all of their secrets. Well, most. She didn’t want to know the gory details of their missions.

“The girl I’m driving is a DEA agent.”

At first, Luke didn’t react. Not even the batting of an eyelash. Greg knew he had heard what he’d said so he didn’t bother repeating himself. After five years of working closely with this team, they all knew each other well. Luke was absorbing the information and trying to compute it. Greg had done the same thing listening to Zoe as she’d talked to her boss. Zoe hadn’t schooled her shock as well when he’d told her who he really was. Luke wasn’t going to like that detail. Their job depended on their secrecy, and he’d told an outsider.
