Becket slept through the flight and, heavily drugged by Sav’s sleep draught, through their arrival in the tree canopy too. His bibelot’s minder, skin wan and travel cloak speckled with chunks of whatever meal Toreth had foolishly partaken prior to the flight, bowed gratefully in approval when Kellan offered to carry Becket’s not inconsiderable bulk from the arrival platform topping his home to Kellan’s personal quarters below.

Sav expertly worked the ropes of the elevator’s pulley, lowering them through dense leaves past several storage levels where crops harvested from Kellan’s gardens waited transport. Kellan’s arms shook with his effort to carry his snoring bibelot, but a covey of dragons couldn’t part him from his Becket now, though he smiled his gratitude at Sav when she bypassed the public platforms of his home to lower them directly to his private bower. Melaeum’s council of casters eagerly anticipated their first glimpse of Kellan’s mate. Kellan’s pulse raced at only the idea of showing off Becket, but morning would be soon enough, despite the familiar faces gathered in his home to celebrate his good fortune. For now, they dropped past the impromptu party to the terrace below, heavily curtained by flowering vines. Becket needed rest, and Kellan needed to watch over his lover’s sleep.

His friends and peers took no offense when the elevator failed to stop. A cheer rolled out instead. The ribald shouts and claps resounded in the forested greenery of Melaeum. Sav beamed at him as she worked the ropes to descend farther. Even Becket’s minder could muster no more than a limp wave at the collected dignitaries in acknowledgment, his surprised attention barely wavering from Kellan and Becket in his arms.

They all knew what Kellan’s bid for privacy meant.

A love match.

Kellan couldn’t claim such tender feelings from his bibelot yet, nor could he state the same of himself with any degree of truth. Love? They barely knew each other. Kellan was now familiar with the sounds Becket made at the last when passion took him. He longed to hear those stuttered breaths and Becket’s long slow moan again. In the short time they’d lingered in Nitcha, he’d come to appreciate Becket’s inner strength and fortitude too, but he did not know his mate. He wanted to love the man tucked against his chest. He showed his desire for greater than a political union by bypassing the Melaeum societal gathering in his and Becket’s honor.

Maybe wanting more was enough. Properly focused and wielded, intent created the most powerful magic, after all.

Grunting, he shifted Becket higher in his embrace and jerked his chin at Sav once the elevator reached his private quarters. Smiling, eyes shining, she anchored the guide ropes while Becket’s minder studied him with narrowed eyes. Sav scurried around the minder and Kellan to nudge aside the screen of vines thick with leaves and fragrant white blooms. She pivoted to glance a kiss across Kellan’s taut biceps.

“Welcome home, my friend.” She lifted on her toes to kiss the coppery crown of Becket’s sleepy head against Kellan’s chest too.
