That did it. I see the exact moment Ethan registers what I’m saying, and I suddenly feel like prey locked in the gaze of a predator.

Perfect.

Some women want flowers and candlelight, and while those things are nice, I’m far too practical to pretend that what I want is anything other than my needs being met. Ethan’s lit the fuse, and I have every intention of securing a blastoff.

Or whatever the proper analogy is.

He got me so worked up that I nearly lost my head too. Overwhelmed with the feel of his deliciously heavy hands on me and mesmerized by the skillful rhythm of his tongue, all I could do was feel and surrender to the waves of sensation rolling through me.

But now, he’s given me a minute to regain my composure… and my strategy. Now I have a plan.

I wonder if gunpowder is laced with testosterone. I’m normally a woman in charge of her own life. I do what I want and take care of what I need. But something about this shotgun journey has amplified it. It’s like every single target I hit has fueled my confidence. What started out making me feel small and inept has become a source of power. My inner boss lady has turned into my inner badass. And I like her. A lot.

But for some reason, at this very moment, being the boss of myself isn’t enough. Right now, standing half naked in the fading sun, I need more. Right now, I want to be the boss of Ethan too.

He slowly begins advancing toward me, closing the space created by his little attack of conscience. I take a step back, grinning when his face shows his confusion.

That’s right, big boy. Follow your rabbit to its lair…

I can tell Ethan’s not entirely sure what’s happening, but my smile is enough encouragement for him to continue on, and we’re directly in front of the outstretched tailgate in no time.

“Well, don’t be shy,” I say, only mildly shocked by the cockiness in my own voice. “If you want it, come and get it.”

Ethan lifts his face to the sky on a howl of laughter, and then, with a shake of his head, he lunges for me. Just like I wanted.

Years ago, as a young and naive social worker, I had taken a generalized introduction to martial arts. And while I can firmly say I never once deployed a single move in my nearly twenty years in that line of work, I find the information quite helpful at the moment. A quick step to the side and a strong foot hook to his ankle has this handsome specimen off balance, pivoting so his back is to the open truck bed and his hands brace behind him on the tailgate.
