Chapter 13

INTRUDERS

I SQUEEZE BOTH TORRANCE AND Berkeley’s hands, strolling between them through an orchard of citrus fruits. Aspen snags me an orange and peels it, staying ultra-aware of my needs while still managing to focus on the two rebel brothers in front of us. My stomach growls, but I don’t want to admit that Torrance’s passion has left me still starving. The academy proved that I can handle it for the most part. As long as I focus on something, I won’t try to attack anyone. And the pieces of orange smell so good.

Reaching around to my mouth, Aspen feeds me some of the orange, the flavor bursting over my tongue. I hum under my breath, drawing the vampire’s attention to me. He gives me a quick once-over, totally checking me out.

I glower. “What’s your deal? You’re a rebel. You obviously know about dhampirs. Why do you keep looking at me? It’s rude.”

The human with him turns around. “I’m a carrier.”

My eyes widen. “You?”

“Is that so hard to believe?” he asks, turning around to stroll backward. “My whole family is. My brother happened to escape his duty. Right, Silas?”

I glance at the back of Silas’s head.

Silas jerks his head to glower at his brother. “Watch it, Grayson. Information buys our way around here.”

“And this coven has something we might possibly want. Don’t let things cloud your judgment.” Grayson fails to keep his voice low enough to avoid us from hearing his remark.

I almost comment, but Berkeley pulls me a bit closer to him, sliding his arm around my back. He bows into me and whispers, “You’re thinking what I’m thinking. I can see it on your face. Something is off about these two.”

“The only thing I can even think they’d want from us is Fiona,” Torrance responds in a whisper almost too low for me to hear.

“You’re right, brother. Rebels hate vampires and would never want to be one. They also consider dhampirs a gift. Outcasts don’t just transform humans either. They have enough competition for blood sources as it is.” Aspen reaches around me again from behind and absentmindedly gives me another slice of the orange.

Torrance tightens his fingers around mine. “We need to find out the reason, but this isn’t the place. If we want to build an alliance and get help from this rebel nest, we cannot afford to take control of the situation. Orlando could assume we’re the real threat. From what I know about him, he is from before the uprising.”

“Agree,” Hudson murmurs, remaining at a distance as he keeps an eye on our surroundings.

A tall wall comes into view through the trees, reminding me of Mount Light Haven. I half expect to get attacked by soldiers at any second for getting so close, but a figure materializes from within the trees and waits for us up ahead.

Orlando bows slightly, giving Berkeley an inquisitive look, his question as to who the fuck these guys with us are clear in his expression. Silas and Grayson stop in their tracks, seemingly growing taller and wider as they get into a defensive stance.
