CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Isaac eased up on the snowmobile’s throttle for the first time in hours, the engine’s high-pitched whine fading. His ears were glad for the break. He doubted he’d ever be able to hear normally again, especially since the howling blizzard wind no longer sounded as loud as it once had. Future hearing problems are the least of your concerns, Isaac told himself, lifting the visor to his helmet, still seeing little in the darkness of night. Try not crashing or falling into some unseen hole in the ground.

After he’d sped past One Corp.’s communication building without warning Charles Jonas or the others, Isaac had raced across the Nothingness, hoping to find any sign of Julietta or the beasts on which she’d been riding. But he found nothing, only heavy snow, gusting wind and darkening skies. And though he’d hoped to push the snowmobile as fast as possible, he found the terrain not as flat and white as it appeared. The snow was uneven for large stretches, moguls dotting the land, snowbanks impossible to spot, causing Isaac to almost crash several times. It was probably a miracle he’d managed to avoid dumping the vehicle, though rough terrain created a rattling noise in the snowmobile that filled Isaac’s stomach with dread.

There’s no turning back now, he thought, looking toward the front of his vehicle, knowing it’d be worthless to try figuring out what was wrong. You’d probably end up making it worse.

Lowering his helmet’s visor, he caught sight of something ahead. . . maybe. With a burst of adrenaline, Isaac smashed the snowmobile’s throttle button and shot forward, nearly losing his grip on the handlebars. The rattling grew louder and the engine sputtered, but Isaac ignored both, squinting within his helmet, hoping his eyes hadn’t been playing tricks on him. Luckily, the ground flattened enough to study the snow in front of him, which didn’t appear as fresh and untouched as snows he’d seen on the rest of his trip.

Are those indentations? Isaac thought, leaning to one side for a closer look, nearly falling off the snowmobile as he did so. Footprints?

Several sets of clustered imprints stretched into the distance, the first of them faded and filling with freshly fallen snow. But as Isaac followed them, the imprints became deeper and more pronounced, obviously headed together in one particular direction. He stopped to look closer at them and was certain he saw three distinctive sets, at least twice the size of prints made by humans, one set for each of the three beasts that had supposedly entered The Mountain’s hangar.

But none for Julietta, he thought, lifting his visor to stare at the ground even closer. Though the worst of the storm had eased, and strands of moonlight filtered through the clouds, it was still too dark to see any potential traces of blood. Though Isaac had been told how Julietta appeared to communicate with the beasts—even ordering them around—and that she’d willingly left with them, he still had a hard time believing she was free of danger in their company.
