The President sat with his team listening to developments thousands of miles away. And though no one said anything, all felt a sense of helplessness.
âTheyâre shutting the city down,â the President commented, listening to comms between Brady and Bagram. âEven if they make it through the roadblocks theyâll be surrounded. The city will be in lock down mode. And theyâll keep it that way for days, even weeks. They have to.â
The President listened as Rashid ranted at his men. And once more, the General seemingly had no control of his emotions.
âHeâll be taken care of,â Sanchez informed the President. âWe have an AWACS airborne.â
âQuicker heâs shut-up the better,â Sambells commented.
âOnce we start jamming their comms, theyâll be sure itâs US forces at play,â Johansson stated.
âItâs a given they already know weâre operating down there,â Landers said.
âThey sure as hell will once we get our hands on the plutonium,â Sambells added bitterly. âCanât wait to listen to their foreign minister try to squirm his way out of this one.â
âSave that for another day, Chuck,â the President said. âWe need to focus on the immediate situation. Prioritize activities on the ground.â
âOf course,â Sambells concurred.
âThe informantâs hidden away?â the President asked.
âYes,â Johansson confirmed.
âWhat about his family?â the President asked further.
âAn agentâs about to extract them from their home,â Johansson answered.
âBut the police are on their way to get them,â the President said.
âWe think weâre ahead of the game there,â Johansson said.
The President stood up and walked over to a monitor displaying images of the concrete shelter concealing the truck with the plutonium.
âAny movement?â he asked an NSA specialist.
âNothing, Mr. President,â she replied. âTheyâve gone to ground.â
âAnd the sensors are still emitting signals?â he checked.
âYes, Mr. President,â she confirmed, pointing at another monitor showing dozens of red dots intermittently highlighting the screen.
âUnlikely theyâll make any moves,â the President said. âNot until things have calmed down.â
The NSA guru nodded in agreement, as the President turned and walked back to the main area, his colleagues huddled around.
âWhile our boys are battling it out down there, I want to make sure Captain Abidâs familyâs taken care of,â the President said. âDirect the appropriate resources.â
âOf course,â Johansson nodded, reaching for his cell and dialing a number.
The President then gestured for Sambells and Sanchez to follow him to an area adjacent to the Situation Room.
âWe need to get ahead of the game,â he told them.
âWeâre doing everything we can,â Sanchez said.
âBut weâre behind the eight ball,â the President said, pointedly. âWe need to throw a curve ball into the mix. Something Pakistanâs military wonât expect.â
âAny ideas? Sanchez queried.
âImmediate assistance on the ground,â the President said. âHelp from a neighbor.â
âIndiaâs the only option,â Sambells explained. âAll other countries in the region are hostile to American interests.â
âOf course,â nodded the President, looking at the Secretary of State. âYouâve got contacts?â
âThereâs someone I know,â Sambells said knowingly.
âTime to call in a favor,â Sanchez suggested.
âCall it what you like, gentleman,â the President said, steely eyed and full of determination. âAll that matters is this mission being nothing but a total success.
