Closure, drain, management

A drain is placed through a port site with its end near the anastomosis, the specimen is retrieved from the peri-umbilical port and the individual ports are closed with deeper fascial sutures for the larger ones. The patient can move after 2–4 hours, and the drain is removed the next morning if dry. A soft diet is maintained until the bowels open normally and the patient can usually go home on post-operative day 1 or 2. The catheter is removed at 7–14 days depending on the centre and a cystogram may be performed to check for anastomotic leakage prior to catheter removal.
