Father Paddy looked out the window for a moment, allowing the power of the Psalm to penetrate the armor of his anger before entering the dining car. The conductor who had punched his ticket a quarter of an hour earlier was now managing the seating. He promptly seated Father Paddy at a table and went in search of a newspaper. As Father Paddy had followed the conductor to his seat, he had inquired about the off chance that a Chicago Tribune might be available. A few minutes later, the conductor laid a Chicago Tribune down on the table.
The headline revealed that direct evidence pointed to a bombing that caused a house fire, claimed a life and hospitalized a second victim. Mrs. Kate OâRourke who had resided at the address was now at St. Josephâs Hospital. The previously unidentified body was that of 23 year-old Victoria McKinney; daughter of Victor and Maura McKinney. Detective Neeson was quoted as saying that the investigation is underway and at present there were no suspects and no arrests had been made. Father Paddy knew the history between Kate and the McKinney family and was astonished by the revelation in the article that placed Victoria at the scene. Father Paddy suspected that Detective Neeson had Victor McKinney squarely in the cross hairs of the investigation. He had no doubt that Victor was involved, no doubt whatsoever. What part did Victoria play in this scheme that obviously went terribly wrong? Father Paddy was not one to entertain hypothetical theories. He was certain that the OâRourkes would be able to bring him up to speed on the events that precipitated this act of violence. He was thankful for the spot in the dining car where the conductor had seated him. It was a small table next to the window that allowed just enough space for one passenger. Father Paddy was not in the mood for social interaction. He laid the newspaper aside and looked out the window. He watched the landscape vanish as quickly as it appeared, in the wake of the commuter train thundering along towards the next stop.
