âAt first, he was my hero.
âWe lived in a place far from the reach of any other people, with our brothers and our father. The light shone so brightly in our land that nobody would call the place any other name that wasnât Heaven. You ask me who he is for me, but a better question is who he has been. I didnât know him in my first days. I remember the colors of our fatherâs palace lost in the infinite light and the long, winding debates of my elders. There were so many of us, I have no memory of him in those halls.
âMy very first memory of him is the memory of a war. One we had never seen before and have yet to see another. When our elders fought, we both took the side of our father. Not a day would pass when I didnât have to kill one of my brothers or one of them tried to kill me. In those days, I found him fighting by my side. In all the horror, every time one of us stumbled, he was there, his arm stretched to get them back up. He gave us hope.
âNo one, aside from our father and the eldest, had shone so brightly before. You could watch him and think he was all there was. If he was with us, we could not lose. He wasnât like the eldest. He wasnât born to be mighty, but he had made himself one of them. Because of him, we won the war.
âAnd so, he became my king.
âFather gave him a crown to wear as a sign of his kingship. We built our country outside of the lands of our father and there lived younger, more innocent people. We saw them growing, raised them, changed their shape so they could resemble us. Before we realized it, we had built a kingdom so vast and rich it rivaled the beauty of our fatherâs land. And we loved every single one of those people.
âWe loved them so much that we whispered the secrets of our land in their ears so they could use them to grow stronger. But that was too much for our father and the eldest among our brothers, and when they came to take us, the ones we loved betrayed us. Once again, many of my brothers had to die, and this time we had to disappear with them. For thousands of years, they tortured him in the darkness as I watched him suffer, scream, and die.
âBut when two children of men walked the halls of a labyrinth, everything changed. We woke up, the darkness disappeared, and suddenly he was my brother. My little one to protect.
âHe looked up to me, and I loved him for it. I think he still believes he loved me first. We lived not too far from here, he and I. He read me stories and wrote tales about me, and in his adventures, I was a princess, and he a king.
