It had been a late night, by the time Pithie and he had overseen sending the body back to the morgue, talked again to the young couple, made sure everything was tidied up.

‘I’d like fine a last dram with you,’ said Pithie, ‘for it’s clear you’ve plenty on your mind. When I get like that I find it’s good to go over with someone else. But I live in Stonehaven, and you’re in the city – it would make it even later for both of us.’

‘Maybe soon, though,’ said Cattanach, shaking hands with him. ‘Thanks for calling me in. I’d sooner have found him alive, but there we are: at least he’s found.’
