CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The time has come. With Chloe's help, I climb up into the bathroom window, then turn around and prepare to lower myself down the ivy trellis.

It's 9:40 in the morning, and there is an Uber waiting for me down the street to take me to Howard's Cafe, where I will meet with the mysterious Trevor Hammond at 10. I am not sure what he will have to say, other than some explanation as to why he warned me that my life is in danger, but I am hopeful that he may provide some insights into the Sterling family.

And specifically into the mysterious development of Alicia’s condition.

"Remember," Chloe says, "you're just going out for a quick coffee. You'll be back before anyone even realizes you're gone."

I nod, holding onto her encouraging gaze as I begin my descent. The brick wall is rough under my fingers, the ivy's leaves soft as they glide against my skin. My heart beats wildly in my chest as the ground comes closer and closer. My sneakers land softly on the manicured lawn, barely making a noise.

I straighten up, take one last glance at Chloe who's watching anxiously from above, and then quickly move along the side of the mansion, blending into the shadows as best as I can.

I pause at the corner, recalling Chloe's instructions as best I can. According to her, if I can get around to the far side of the rose garden, the wall of blooms will shield me from the house's view and allow me to slip over the hill at the edge of the property. From there I can make my way down the driveway, staying hidden behind the hill until I reach the place where my Uber is parked.

I sure hope nobody notices the parked car before I get there and grows suspicious.

I blow out a breath, swallow my anxiety, and take my first step onto the cobblestone pathway. The promise of uncovering the truth about Alicia and the Sterlings drags me forward. I stick to the path, careful to avoid the security cameras that Chloe has warned me about, tucked away in the canopy of trees and among the stone sculptures that litter the expansive garden.

The rose garden is just ahead, its vibrant colors muted by a low-lying fog. I glance over my shoulder once more, making sure no one's following me, then duck behind a large marble statue of Aphrodite, hiding in her shadow until I'm sure it's safe to continue.

I’m going to feel so silly if I run into Grant.

A hushed sigh escapes my lips as I creep along the side of the towering rosebushes, their thorns scratching at my arms and legs through my clothes. The perfume of the roses is overwhelming but somehow comforting, a reminder that beneath all the cold technology and surveillance there's still something natural, something alive in this place.

Finally, I reach the garden's edge and the hill Chloe had mentioned. I glance back towards the mansion one last time, half-expecting to see someone racing towards me.
