Chapter 26

“IT’S TIME,” ANYA TOLD the women gathered around her in the barrack when the lights flickered and the camp was plunged into darkness. The first part of the plan was in motion. A Red Army prisoner had forced her way into the power plant, killed the night guard, and shut down the electrical grid.

The women took their knives and other weapons and left the barrack. Six women ran to the canteen while Anya and the five remaining women ran to the gas chambers. Even though the camp had been plunged into darkness, it was a clear frosty night, and everything was bathed in moonlight.

“Run! Escape! The fence is down!” Anya shouted at prisoners that came outside to see what was happening.

Anya and the other women acted on adrenaline as they subdued four guards and dragged them to the gas chambers, shoving them inside with the other guards Ivan and his men had already captured. Anya grabbed a gun from Ivan and rushed to the canteen full of off-duty, unarmed drunk guards and officers. She shot anyone that tried to escape, and soon the building was full of dead or dying Nazis. The rebels dragged five guards with them who begged and pleaded for their lives.

“What? You aren’t so brave now, are you?” Anya mocked the frightened guards. “All day long you listen to women and children beg for mercy, and you laugh at them as you kill them. Now we are going to do to you what you have done to them, you dirty German cows!” Anya snorted and pointed at the terrified guards. “Look, you pissed your pants, you coward bitches. You don’t know what to do without your guns and dogs, do you?”

“Let us go! You won’t get away with this! They know something is wrong and will stop you.”

Anya ignored the guards and continued dragging them to the gas chamber, where she found Ivan and other armed prisoners surrounding the building. She helped the others as they shoved the Nazis into the gas chamber. When it was full, Ivan sealed the door and dropped in the gas pellet. When the screaming stopped, he and another male prisoner dragged the bodies out of the chamber and threw them in a pile.

The plan was to gas as many Nazis as possible and then blow up the gas chamber and crematorium. Anya heard women shouting at others to run and escape over the fence that one of the Red Army prisoners had torn down.
