Chapter Six

“Uh?” Marybeth asked, trying to decipher his question. A feat, which was extremely difficult while standing this close to him. An unmistakable need flowed through her system. She wanted him to kiss her like he had on the porch several days ago, and the way his blue eyes seemed to dance across her face, and then settle on her mouth made her lips quiver. She tried to breathe, but temptation was killing her.

Before another second ticked by, and with tremendous speed, they met. His big, strong arms wrapped around her. She looped hers around his neck. Their lips joined, tasting, feeling, connecting in every possible way. The world spun, cocooning them in a space that was made just for them, a place she’d never been before.

It was as if he was a match, and she a candle of which he’d touched the wick. Every ounce of her was on fire, alive. She tightened her hold on his neck, pressing her body against him, wanting to feel the heat of his flesh melding into hers. It was wanton, she knew, but more exciting than anything life had ever provided.

Marybeth gasped for air when he pulled his lips from hers. She wanted to take a breath and make his lips meet hers again, but Trevor tucked her head beneath his chin, and tightened his hold so she was snuggled to his chest like a babe. It was a wonderful place to be, and she closed her eyes, accepting the embrace and the remarkable way her heart pounded against the walls of her chest.

They stood like that for a long time, until the sun had set behind the trees, and the moon took its turn to brighten the world with a soft glow. Her mind swung in her head like the pendulum on the mantel clock. Back and forth, but never stilling long enough to actually settle on one thought. There was just too much to contemplate, and the comfort of his arms too inviting. She could have stayed there forever, but knew it was time to return to the house. Granny would need help with supper, the children would need assistance getting ready for bed, and she still needed to see how bad Edmond’s leg was. The thought made her stiffen and pull back.

“Where did you find my brother? What happened?” Those were the questions she’d came outside to ask some time ago.

Trevor lessened his hold, but kept his arms around her. “I found him near our camp. He’d been injured in a battle down south further, and from what he told me, he’d left an army hospital when they wanted to remove his leg. He’s been traveling to get home for a long time, and his body must have finally given out.” Concern filled his eyes as he glanced toward the cabin.

“Edmond’s stubborn,” she admitted, “always has been.”

“Where’s his wife? Sally and Dane’s mother.”

“Winifred took fever and died when Sally was just an infant. When Edmond decided to join the army, he asked me to come take care of the children.
