A knock sounded on Elizabeth’s door as she rounded up her cleaning. She answered it almost immediately, pulling the door open. It was Mr Jones.

He held up a letter to her with a dazzling smile.

“You have a letter from home?”

“From home?” Her eyes widened with excitement. She missed her family so much.

“From Miss Jane Bennet, precisely,” Mr Jones said and handed the letter to her.

Elizabeth gladly received the letter. She was glad she was almost done with her chores so she would be free to read the letter in no time.

Part of her wanted to tear the letter open immediately and see its content. A more significant part of her wanted to do just that, but she knew she had to finish up with her chores at least and then check again on Mrs Jones so that when she would finally settle to read the letter, it would be in a relaxed state of mind pleasing enough. She wondered what Jane possibly wrote to her. Was her engagement successful?

Oh, she wholly hoped it was!

Lizzy dashed out, finishing up with her chores. She checked once more on Mrs Jones, and then after delivering some goodies to the children in the neighbourhood, she returned to her room for the letter.

She exhaled deeply and took off her apron, her face holding all bits of a smile as she finally relaxed into her bed and took Jane’s letter opening it.

There was already a smile on Elizabeth’s face before she opened the letter, but as she read through, the smile only increased, reaching her eyes. She sat up from the bed and then, after a while, stood, still reading the letter.

There was a wide grin on her face and tears streaming down her cheeks. Her eyes had turned slightly red as she had become emotional while reading the letter.

‘Congratulations, Jane,’ Elizabeth thought, laughing to herself. She was incredibly happy for her sister and wished she could join her family soon. Lizzy could not leave yet, and Mrs Jones had yet to recover fully, mainly because Elizabeth had grown somewhat attached to them.

“Elizabeth!” Mr Jones called out her name from downstairs.

Lizzy was still absorbed in her thoughts. It was a Saturday, a day that required not much work. Coming down the stairs, Elizabeth saw Mr Jones waiting patiently, smiling at her, which made Elizabeth a bit uncomfortable.

Sensing Elizabeth’s confused look, Mr Jones handed her a letter.

“What is this?” Elizabeth asked confusedly.

“It is another letter, of course. What does it look like?” Mr Jones replied to her.

“Another one?” Elizabeth gasped. Two letters in a row?

“Today seems like a day of letters for you,” he added with another smile.

Elizabeth cautiously opened the letter, looking enquiringly at Mr Jones; why would he be smiling because she had received a letter?

He was happy when he gave her Jane’s letter, but this particular smile looked suspicious.

However, the moment she started to read it, Elizabeth understood. It turned out the letter had come from Lady Catherine’s daughter Anne, Mr Darcy’s cousin, who had invited her to Rosings Park for luncheon.
