Aesara had been right. The wind whistled and batted against the ship, pushing it this way and that. The rain pelted the ship like icy daggers, and Aesara feared that it might not survive once the waves came.
Vance entered the cabin, slamming the door shut as the wind washed rainwater in. He was drenched from head to toe, his hair plastered to his skin.
He said nothing as he wiped his face with a dry cloth. Aesara opened her mouth to speak, but Vance beat her to it.
âDonât,â he warned. âDonât say a word.â
Aesara crossed her arms, pouting. âI wasnât going to say anything.â
âYou were, and I know that it wasnât going to be remotely helpful. So, unless you have something nice to say, donât say anything at all.â
He peeled off his shirt, tossing it into a soaking heap on the floor. Aesara scrunched her nose, silently picking it up and draping it against the desk chair. Just because he was in a grumpy mood didnât mean the cabin needed to smell of mold.
âCanât your magic do anything?â he asked.
Aesara shook her head. âI didnât create this storm, Vance. Itâll be much harder to try and calm it.â She didnât bother mentioning that she had already tried. The water wouldnât listen to her.
He grumbled under his breath and plopped onto the floor. He grunted as he tore off his boot, dumping out the rain and seawater. Thunder clapped overhead and Vance sighed, leaning his head back against the wall.
âCan I help?â Aesara asked. She hated sitting around while everyone else worked.
âNot unless you can stop the waves. The rain I can deal with, but the waves? Theyâre the worst.â
No sooner had he said it, the ship was knocked to one side. Aesara fell forward, landing right in Vanceâs lap.
âSorry!â She tried to get off, but once the waves started, they didnât stop till the storm did.
Vance wrapped his arms around her, pulling her to her feet as he stood. âTry not to hurt yourself while Iâm gone, Princess.â
She stared at him as if he was crazy. âYouâre going to try and sail in this?â
He shrugged, tugging his boot back on. âHave to. If I donât, the ship is sure to sink.â
Aesara glanced down at her hands. There had to be something she could do to help. She followed him, only to immediately regret her decision.
The rain stung as it hit her skin, and her hair whipped wildly around her. Aesara disagreed with Vance; sheâd take the waves over the rain. She had to squint to keep it from pelting her eyes, and the wind pushed against her so harshly she was impressed that anyone remained standing.
Aesara nearly slipped but managed to use the wind to her advantage. She guided it behind her and used it to propel herself forward and back onto her feet. There was no way they would survive this if they couldnât even stand.
She paused, looking at the fading green light surrounding her hands. Maybe she didnât need to control the entire storm.
