A few weeks later, I was back at Maggie’s and nail polish fumes sent my head swimming. “I’m here more than I’m at my own house.” I capped the bottle of clear nail polish.

“Right? It’s so damn annoying.” Maggie stuck out her tongue and pulled the divider between her toes.

I whacked her in the head with a pillow. “It’ll probably be a lot more once I transfer to Darling U.”

She stopped and looked at me like a confused poodle before the closed bottle of nail polish hit the floor and skidded under the couch. “You bitch! You’ve been here for five hours and you’re just telling me now.” She tackled me to the couch, knocking our foreheads together.

“Waiting for the maximum impact felt right.”

She screeched and hugged me tighter.

“This calls for a celebration.” Scrambling off me, she happy danced her way to the kitchen.

I sat up. “Ezra will probably be over later.”

“Of course he will. I’ll bet he’s got spotters at the airport to make sure you can’t get past him.”

“Prosecco or should we go for the real deal?” She held up two corked wine bottles.

“Let’s save the real thing for once my parents sign off on this.” A freefalling feeling plummeted through my stomach. Would it be better if I did it tipsy?

“Did you get a scholarship?”

“The competition will be insane for the three they offer every year.”

“We’ll make it work.” The gunshot-loud cork pop rung in my ears.

Always a pro, Maggie didn’t spill a drop and poured it into a glass.

Her intercom rang.

“I’ll get another glass.”

I hopped over the back of the couch and caught myself against the wall. “Hello.”

“Hey, beautiful.”

Warm tummy flutters spread throughout my whole body. “Come on up.”

I left the door propped open with my shoe and joined Maggie in the kitchen. The flutes were filled to the brim.

“Generous with the pours, Mags.” I sipped mine before lifting it from the counter.

“Like we’re not going to finish the whole bottle.”

“I can’t believe it’s finally happening. I mean, it’s not STFU, but I’ll take it! To Willa, her sheer will and determination, and the best friend I’ve ever had.” She clinked her glass to mine.

“To the best friend I’ve ever had who never lets me doubt myself.”

We both tipped back our glasses.

The heated caress along my neck speckled me in goosebumps. Ezra’s thumbs were magic.

“What’s the special occasion?” His lips did crazy things to my insides, liquefying them from the first syllable.

“She got in!” Maggie handed Ezra a glass of sparkling wine.

I hadn’t wanted to get too many hopes up before I found out. Plus, the pain of rejection wasn’t one I wanted to spread around, but now that I knew I’d gotten in, it was the perfect time to share.

“Great.” He accepted it and took a sip, keeping his arms wrapped around me. “Into where?”

“Darling U’s Language School,” Maggie crowed like I’d been awarded a Nobel Prize. “She’s moving here.” Her lottery-win jump took away some of my fear about making the choice.

Ezra choked on his drink, which spilled down his chin.
