Viruses cause colds, and antibiotics do not treat colds or help with cold symptoms. Many cough and cold products can be purchased over the counter, but they should not be given to children younger than 4 years of age, as they don’t work and may cause dangerous side effects. They also may not work for children older than 4 years of age. Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen, nasal saline spray, and a humidifier, instead of over-the-counter cough and cold products. Honey or cough drops can help a cough in older children.
