Chapter 4

It was a pleasantly uneventful afternoon when the post arrived at Hunsford Parsonage. Charlotte, who had been organizing their modest library, eagerly approached the stack of letters, her curiosity piqued. As she sifted through the various correspondences, her fingers brushed against a familiar handwriting that sent a small jolt of excitement through her. It was a letter from none other than her dear friend Elizabeth Bennet.

As she delicately unfolded the paper, she noticed the peculiar texture of the parchment. It was slightly rough to the touch, almost as if it had been composed in a fit of spirited determination. The ink was bold and assertive, as if it too shared in Elizabeth's enthusiasm. The very paper seemed to embody her friend's vivacious spirit.

Charlotte's heart fluttered in anticipation, and her fingers tingled as they traced the elegant loops and whirls of Elizabeth's penmanship. With bated breath, she began to read the letter, her eyes widening with each passing line.

The letter announced Elizabeth's intention to visit Hunsford, a prospect that filled Charlotte with both excitement and trepidation. Would Elizabeth approve of her new life with Mr. Collins? Could she understand the practical reasons behind their union? As these questions swirled through her mind, Charlotte found herself inadvertently tapping her foot in an uncharacteristically nervous manner.

As she continued to read, a wry smile spread across her face. Elizabeth's wit shone through in her description of the various misadventures that had befallen the Bennet family since Charlotte's departure. The words seemed to dance on the page, and Charlotte could almost hear Elizabeth's infectious laughter ringing in her ears.

At the same time, a sense of guilt subtly gnawed at Charlotte at the prospect of Elizabeth's impending visit. She worried that her friend might not understand her pragmatic approach to marriage, or that she might pity Charlotte for having to endure Mr. Collins' eccentricities.

As these conflicting emotions battled within her, Charlotte absentmindedly rubbed the paper between her fingers, feeling the rough texture once more. She felt a sudden urge to crumple the letter into a ball and toss it aside, as if that would somehow alleviate her worries.

But then she paused and took a deep breath, reminding herself of the strength and resilience that had brought her to this point. She straightened the paper with a firm hand, and a determined expression crossed her features. She knew that Elizabeth was a dear friend, and that she would never judge Charlotte for making the best of a difficult situation.

Despite her doubts and anxieties, however, Charlotte was also excited to see her friend. It had been too long since they had last spent time together, and she looked forward to catching up on all that had happened since Elizabeth's marriage to Mr. Darcy.

As she finished reading the letter, anticipation and excitement bubbled up inside her, making her chuckle at the thought of the mischief and mayhem that would undoubtedly ensue in the coming days.

As she placed the letter down, Charlotte realized that she needed to prepare for Elizabeth's arrival.
