Chapter Ten

VIOLA

“Are you certain about this?” Teresa brushed my hair for me. “I’m worried.”

“You should be happy I have agreed to this. You did not want me to leave and you get a gown and party out of it.”

“All I needed out of it was you still here, but those are great bonuses.” She braided my hair then sat on the bed. “Can you believe we will finally see inside the building we have been admiring all this time?”

“My grandmother used to say if you sat quiet on a problem it would find its way. When I was little, I would be frustrated with her because that is not an answer when you need one, but I can see now what she was saying.” I waved Teresa over so I could brush out her hair. “I thought all was lost, then this happened.”

“She said a lot of things I never understood,” Teresa said. “She was the only grandmother I ever knew.”

“I know, and she loved you.”

“No more mushy talk. You will make me cry and you know how much I hate that.”

“How dare I make you have feelings. What was I thinking?” I hugged her from behind. “Let’s get some sleep; I have a busy week now.”

“Do you have ideas for the design of our dresses?”

“I have designs in my head for every woman in the city. They have been spinning around in there for years,” I paused, “unless you would like to tell me what you want.”

“Not a chance. You have impeccable taste and I know you will make me beautiful for my husband.”

“When you find him we will both be engaged, even if mine is a fake.” I climbed under the covers. “Do you think I am making a mistake?”

“I kind of do, but you have always had a level head, so I trust you. But, I will be watching to make sure you do not get to involved.” She turned to face me. “Unless, of course, you like him for real. That is my biggest concern.”

“If I am honest, I do like him, very much in fact, but he has made it clear repeatedly that he wants a proper city girl.”

“Then we shall secretly look for your husband at this big party, too.”

The next few days flew by so fast. I received a return telegram from my parents that they understood my delay. Thorne received word back from his uncle that he would come as soon as he got the animals situated and Thorne in turn sent back that he took care of it already and would expect him on the next ferry.

“Annie, I need you to try on your gown today so I can make any adjustments,” I told her at lunch one afternoon. “Teresa will be coming to the barn tonight to try hers on.”

“What about your gown? I haven’t seen you start it.” Annie poured us each a glass of water. “You have to have a gown. Can I help at all?”

“Not to worry, I will make mine.
