AS SHE LEFT, SHE TOOK all Darcyâs anger with her. Without it, the despair he was holding back came flooding in, leaving him without the strength to stand. Staggering towards the fallen remains of a tree trunk, he sank down and idly watched a line of ants scurrying around, carrying a treasure to their home. He envied the mindless toil that kept them too occupied to experience unhappiness.
He could not bring himself to move.
You are the ones guilty of treachery.
Darcy had kissed her. If someone had come upon them, Elizabeth would have been compromised. And now she believed he was toying with her, that he was devoid of honor.
How could he have made such a mess of it all? He felt wrung out, deprived of all strength. He did not know if he would ever be able to stand up again.
âI say, Darcy.â
Darcy raised his head and found Bingley and Miss Bennet peering down at him. âAre you unwell?â
The sight of Bingleyâs unsuspecting expression rekindled Darcyâs anger at being duped. Somehow, Elizabeth had made him forget that aspect of the situation. He could never forgive her for what she had done. Bingley thought Miss Bennet an angel, but she had been deceiving him. Should he blurt out the truth about Mrs. Bennetâs illness? Surely Bingley deserved to know.
I believed you both to be gentlemen.
Elizabeth may not consider him a gentleman, but he would not do such an ungentlemanly thing, not in front of Miss Bennet. He was not so lost to propriety. He would wait until the two men were in Netherfield and talk to Bingley privately.
Bingley put out a hand to him.
âDo you need help standing up? Has Miss Elizabeth gone for help?â
âIt is nothing. A momentary weakness,â Darcy replied. The concern on Bingleyâs face reminded him of how Elizabeth had taken his concern for her and spat it in his face.
Another surge of anger swept through him. It gave him the push he needed to jerk to his feet.
âMiss Elizabeth is indisposed. She would like us all to turn back. If you could call the others, Bingley?â
Darcy would make sure Bingley did not spend another moment with Miss Bennet. The very sight of the Bennet sisters sickened him. He hoped never to set eyes on them again. It was a very good thing this had happened. It gave Darcy the much-needed incentive he had been lacking.
He would depart at dawn and never set foot in the neighborhood again in his life.
