CHAPTER 15

A steady drizzle fell as Turner walked home from the Tube station, but he barely noticed it. Thoughts of his aunt and his need to talk to her about the problems facing The Investigator made him realise how much he relied on her. She wasn’t too involved in the daily running, but at times like this she was the rock they all clung to. At least the swelling of her brain had eased. He thrust his hands into his pockets and found the memory stick he’d taken from Antonia’s desk. He’d examine it when he got home.

Turner speeded up but tripped on an uneven paving slab and his other foot slipped. He retained his balance, cursing his new shoes. They were useless in the wet. He’d have to take care when he reached the cobbles. He checked around to make sure nobody had noticed his stumble. A dark people carrier sat fifty metres ahead. They were taking a chance; the traffic wardens round here didn’t take prisoners. He lifted his collar. Only a short distance to get home then he’d break open the bottle of twenty-year-old Springbank and have a glass or two. He’d save Antonia some, but he’d better not tell her how much it cost in case Eleanor got to hear about it.

A figure moved in the people carrier as he approached; they must be waiting for someone from the mews. As he drew level he glanced at it, but couldn’t see through the dark tint. The sensation of being observed made his scalp crawl and, hunching his shoulders, he hurried by. The doors slid open and when he glanced back he saw shadowy figures emerge from the vehicle and come straight towards him. He froze for an instant, then ran. He’d reach his front door in a few steps. As he left the pavement, his foot shot away from under him and he crashed to the ground. His skull bounced on the cobbles. A metallic taste filled his mouth and voices reached him from a distance before fading.
