CHAPTER
FIFTEEN
âI thought your little man might be able to use this.â Sam stood in the doorway of Agnesâs house.
Agnes looked at the handcrafted high chair he held in his arms. âYou made this?â
He nodded. âI build furniture to pass the time. Nothing fancy, of course. Just useful pieces. I heard you were looking for baby things.â
âItâs perfect. Iâve been feeding him on my lap, and he spits his food everywhere. By the end of a meal, Iâm covered in it. Iâve never had so much laundry to do in all my life.â
Sam chuckled as he set down the chair. âI guess thatâs all part of the fun of babies. My sisters werenât so different when they ate.â
âHow many siblings do you have?â
âWell, my ma was married and had me and one of my sisters. Our pa died when we were small. She remarried and had eight more.â He ran his hand along the back of the high chair. âHow âbout yourself?â
âIt was just me. I didnât have any brothers or sisters.â
âSounds like you and I came from different worlds.â He tickled Fred under his chin. âAn only child and a city girl.â He whistled low. âI wonder how you ended up in a place like this.â
âI wonder how any of us did.â
âI suppose it could be luck.â He looked away. âOr it was just what was at the end of the road.â
âIs this the end of your road?â she asked.
Sam stood on the doorstep slowly rubbing his hands together. âI guess you could say Iâve been wandering, and this is where I ended up. Itâs just a place to work while I decide whatâs next.â
âI think we all wander at times.â
âI been thinking about my sisters and family and seems everyone is working toward something. I donât want to wander forever.â
The temptation to ask more crept in, but she did not honor it.
He lifted the high chair back into his arms. âCan I put this somewhere for you?â
âBy the table.â Agnes smiled as she admired her table with the perfect high chair beside it. âI can pay you.â
âNo need. I wanted to do it, and the wood was easy enough to come by. The scraps at the camp are fair game.â He patted the back of the chair. âIâm heading into the hills to do a little hunting. I often catch more than I can eat. Would you like a cut?â
Freddie fussed in her arms, squirming uncomfortably. âThatâs very kind of you. Iâm not sure I should. I probably shouldnât even accept the chair.â
âKeep it. It was good of you to take Freddie in. I wanted to help.â
She nodded, grateful. âThank you.â
Sam patted Freddieâs head. âGlad to do it.â He tipped his hat before leaving the house.
Agnes laid Freddie down and unpinned him. âWhat do you think of Sam?â she said as she changed the baby. âHeâs not so coarse as the other loggers. Iâd say heâs friendly, wouldnât you?â
Shaking her head, she looked down at Freddie and watched him gurgle and blow bubbles.
