“I apologize, Charlotte,” Lydia said as they crept down the hallway. The overcast morning made it seem as if they were sneaking out of their rooms at midnight and not merely going down to breakfast.

“Not to worry, my lady,” Charlotte said, stifling a yawn. “I’ve worn my thickest stockings and I have a book.”

“Good. I’ll meet up with you after I’ve breakfasted. I won’t be long.” She’d bound her breasts beneath her stays, just in case they would actually spar. The idea of him undoing her laces was one she liked. The idea that his fingers might brush her skin, a soft touch on her shoulder blade, or tucking up a wisp of her hair on the nape of her neck, she couldn’t think of anything else.

“The weather doesn’t look promising,” Charlotte said.

Lydia rushed through a piece of toast and nibbled on a bit of ham. Bess had always counseled her to eat a little before meeting, just not too much.

“Will you go riding, my lady?” Peters asked, jolting Lydia out of her speedy reverie.

“Of course, yes,” Lydia answered, willing herself to slow down.

“May I recommend that you either forego your exercise this morning or postpone until the afternoon? The weather may not cooperate.” The butler bowed.

“Thank you for your advice, but I think I will still try to get out before the rain.” Lydia threw down the last swallow of tea and hurried back to the foyer, meeting back up with Charlotte. They bustled their way to the stables, but even before arriving, fat raindrops fell all around.

The irrefutable evidence of a spoiled morning slowed Lydia. She huffed in frustration. “No!” she insisted at the sky.

Charlotte watched with her hands clasped in front of her. When Lydia was done with her stomping, Charlotte spoke. “I’m sorry my lady. We should go back to the house. We can’t have both you and Lady Agnes ill. Your mother wouldn’t survive it.”

“My mother would welcome any effort to dampen my spirits.” Lydia trudged back towards the house, the raindrops falling faster and faster.

“That’s not true,” Charlotte protested.

Lydia threw a backward glance at the trees. For a moment, she thought she saw Mr. Arthur standing in the copse, watching her retreat.
