Jane awoke with a start. The room was momentarily unfamiliar with cool, bright sunshine streaming in the east-facing window. The smell of fresh air permeated the room, despite the closed windows. She was at the Lorian estate. Flopping back down onto the pillow, Jane closed her eyes once again, savoring the dream.
The illicit dream. The dream she would tell no one, not even Emma. The dream in which she lay in a meadow with Vasyaâas sheâd called him in her dream. Vasya had his arm open, and she lay within its confines. They spoke about somethingâshe couldnât remember what, it was all fading so fast. But he placed his finger on her chin, turning her face towards his. The searing look in his dark eyes was all she needed. She knew, like a thunderclap, that she loved him.
He pulled her on top of him, as if he were a horse, and pulled her down to kiss him. They kissed and they kissed, and his hands roamed her body, caressing her sides, cupping her face.
She supposed that dreams could be more illicit than that. But it was the feeling she had when she awoke. The aching in her belly, the want thrumming through her, all the way to her fingertips. She would luxuriate in those feelings. But in came a maid to lay the fire. So much for luxuriating.
âOh,â the maid said, shocked that Jane was awake. She bobbed a curtsy. âMy apologies, my lady. I hope I did not wake you.â
âNo, I was already up.â Jane looked at the windowâs light. The sun was different in the country. No buildings to hide behind here. No ash to blacken the windows. Jane threw back the blankets but found the air much colder than she anticipated. She flipped them back on, vowing to wait until the room warmed before she left her bed.
Christmas had passed and they had not celebrated it, which was fine by Jane. Their father was still livid with Emma and had said it would take him longer to reunite with his eldest daughter, and Aunt Diana wasnât sure she could associate with Emma until Captain Somerset, now Lord Aberscomb, returned and claimed in front of God and everyone that Emma was in truth his wife.
Aunt Diana was suspicious. As were many, according to one of the gossip columns, calling Emmaâs maneuvers a âcoup dâetatâ as she had been betrothed to a viscount but married the heir to an earldom. But Emma had never truly been engaged, not for more than a few minutes. Jane didnât care for the gossip columns and didnât care for Aunt Diana sharing them with her.
Once the maid was gone and the fire had warmed her small room, she put on her wrapper and slippers and wandered over to Emmaâs bedroom next door. Emma was still sleeping, her face swollen and exhausted, pillows and blankets arranged to support the absolutely huge belly she had grown.
Jane slipped in on the other side of the bed,
