Chapter 9
The next morning at breakfast, Richard couldnât keep his eyes off me. There was this twisted, animal grin on his face as he stared hungrily at me over the top of his goblet. It was almost as if he wished to have his way with me right there in the middle of breakfast.
I did my best to play coy, averting his eyes just enough to keep him interested. The longer he believed the lie I had told him, the better off I was and the less suspicious he would be of me.
Mrs. Brian entered the dining room halfway through the meal, breaking the growing tension between Richard and I.
âLady Nash, a letter has arrived for you,â she said, her nostrils flaring just as they always did. She handed the sealed parchment to me with a stiff curtsy.
I took it and broke the seal. I could feel Richardâs gaze on the side of my head. âWho is it from, my dear?â he asked.
My heart was pounding. Surely Mr. Watson wouldnât have been so foolish as to send me a letter so early in the day when Richard might see it?
My eyes quickly scanned the page as I searched for the signature. I smiled and breathed a sigh of relief.
âOh, itâs a letter from my dear friend Lord Jonathon,â I said. My head was light with the rapid shift from terror to joy. âAnd it appears that my father has added a special note for me as well. He must have gone to visit them now that the weather is nice.â
âLord Jonathon?â Richard asked, his curiosity coating his words in suspicion. âIâm afraid I am unfamiliar with that name.â
âOh, he is the son of the Earl of Sumpter,â I said. âWe were practically family. They lived just down the hill from me.â
âI see,â Richard said, glancing down at his plate.
âIâm certain you have met him,â I said hurriedly. âWhen I told him we were to be married, he had nothing but high praise for you, and seemed quite familiar with your decorated history.â
âI do know his father,â Richard said, running his fingers over his chin. âYes, perhaps Iâve met the lad. What did he have to say?â
I realized I hadnât actually read the letter in full yet. âHe tells me my family is well, andâ¦â I smiled. âMy sisters are apparently missing me quite dearly. And, oh! He says he will be in London come tomorrow, and was hoping to stop by and spend some time with us.â
âWell, I donât very well see why not,â Richard said. âAlthough, I must take a small trip up to Nottingham this evening.â
âOh,â I said with mock sadness. âWhat brings you there?â
âJust some business,â he said, shaking his head. âRather dull business, I might add. Oh well. You shall have to give Lord Jonathon my best if he leaves before I return.â
âOf course I will,â I said.
Richard wiped his face with his napkin before rising to his feet. âWell, I must be off. Early day today.
