FIFTY-NINE

Jo and McKinley canvassed the neighborhood. They knocked at every door in a three-block radius. It took them all morning. And it turned out to be fruitless. The shooting happened too late at night. No one was awake. No one reported any strange noises.

“Could have been a silenced weapon,” Jo suggested as they walked back toward the alley. “They usually still make a good bit of noise. But it can easily be attributed to a car door shutting or a trash can falling over. Something mundane.”

“No one would remember a sound like that,” McKinley said with a sigh. “Even if they did, we wouldn’t be any further along. We already know a person stood in the alleyway and fired two shots. He picked up his bullet casings and ran. It took ten minutes for Leone’s body to be discovered. A person can get to a lot of places in ten minutes.”

“But,” Jo said, “he would still have to follow a particular path. Once he exited the alleyway, he could have made a few different choices for where to go next. But the alley is a chokepoint. We checked the mouth of it for casings. Now we need to scour the rest of it. I hope you’re not too hungry.”

McKinley’s stomach growled right on cue. “I’ll survive. Let’s do it.”

They started at one end of the alley and worked their way down. They moved as slowly as sloths, checking every inch of the place. They were lucky it was so clean. It didn’t take as long as they feared.

“Nothing, once again,” McKinley said. “I’m sensing a pattern here.”

Jo sighed. “All right. Let’s get some lunch.”

They were about to leave the alley when Jo noticed something small and white, sticking out between the wheels of a trash can. She had seen it before, but she took it for a straw wrapper. Now, she realized it was something else.

She used a pen from her pocket to pick the thing up.

“What is it?” McKinley asked.

“A hair tie,” she said.

He shrugged. “It’s probably been here for a while.”

“No. It’s not dirty. It’s not even wet. Even though it was raining yesterday. It hasn’t been here long at all.” She moved it close to her nose and sniffed. “Still smells like shampoo.”

“So, our shooter likes to wear their hair in a ponytail?” McKinley asked.

“Maybe,” Jo replied. “This makes it more likely to be a female shooter. But it’s hardly a clincher. A lot of guys have long hair these days. And when you’re trying to do some precision shooting, it’s a good idea to keep the hair out of your eyes.”

She carried the hair tie to her car. She bagged it up and put it next to the shovel.

“Got a lot of stuff to turn in,” McKinley said.

“I’ll do it after we eat,” Jo said. “I’m starving.”
