Chapter eleven

Evan

Istepped into the house at four-thirty to grab a shower, and the familiar warmth and the scent of something cooking made me pause for a moment. “Hey, Evan,” Meryl called cheerfully without turning around, her focus on chopping what looked like fresh herbs. “I’m torn between corn on the cob and baked potatoes for dinner. What do you think?”

I hesitated, hovering in the doorway. I hadn’t mentioned anything about going out tonight, not even a hint. The thought of explaining it made my stomach twist oddly. “Uh, actually, Meryl, I won’t be home for dinner tonight.”

She paused, her knife hovering over the cutting board, then resumed chopping. “Oh? That’s a change. Got plans?”

I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling the prickly heat rise to my face. “Yeah, something like that.” I didn’t meet her eyes, hoping she wouldn’t probe further. I wasn’t sure I could handle a barrage of questions about Meg and what this dinner meant—or didn’t mean.

Meryl glanced over her shoulder, giving me a small, knowing smile. “Well, that sounds nice. It’s good to see you getting out.”

I fidgeted with the keys in the pocket of my jeans, feeling suddenly awkward standing there. “Yeah, I guess so.”

The silence stretched for a moment, filled only by the sounds of cooking. Meryl set down her knife and wiped her hands on her apron, turning to face me fully.

“I hope you have a pleasant evening, Evan,” she said, her voice warm and devoid of any prying tone. “You deserve it.”

I managed a small smile, grateful for her tact. “Thanks, Meryl. I appreciate it.”
