Chapter Fifteen

Somewhere during the past four days, the confident sex kitten who jumped Jack Friday night was replaced by a skittish woman who was having trouble making eye contact. Also, for a homebody, she was exceptionally busy.

Saturday, she did as she promised and drove him to his bike so he could put the damn thing back together. After he finished, he thought they’d spend the day together. He’d take her for a ride, and maybe pick up something to eat. Instead, while he was working, so was she. By the time everything was put back together, her arms were full of binders that she had to have reviewed by Monday. He’d asked about Sunday. She had a family thing. Every night since then, she put in long hours at the office—too long for him to arguably find a reason to stick around, especially since the higher-ups started cracking down on unapproved overtime, and Anne sent him home anytime he asked.

This was starting to feel like the brush off, which he was having a hard time grasping considering she kissed him this time, and a whole lot more. He practically had a permanent hard-on these days. At the office, he pictured what she was wearing underneath her work clothes, and at night, he couldn’t stop recalling the way she got up close and personal with the tattoo over his dick. Then there was the next morning. He’d never had sex without a condom or with that much eye contact. It was intense and so fucking hot, and he was more than ready to do it again.

Anne didn’t strike him as the love and leave them, one-night stand type. Why would she give up on dating unless she wanted something real and wouldn’t settle for less? Maybe she wasn’t sure about him. He thought he made it pretty clear that he was a changed man who was looking for the same thing, but maybe he should have kept that bit about his wilder days to himself. The sad truth was she didn’t know half of it. He’d literally lost count of how many women he’d been with around the world. These were the thoughts swirling in Jack’s head as he sped along PCH at the butt crack of dawn. Today was the photo shoot, and he was determined to get to the bottom of Anne’s evasiveness. She couldn’t avoid him when she was taking pictures of him all day. He expected more of what they did last time, but his hopes of just the two of them were immediately dashed when he arrived in the parking lot to the familiar trail. There was a whole team of people milling about, packing away different pieces of equipment.
