The White Manor was a well-established hotel, distinguished by well-tended lawns and a clientele to match. It was far from John’s usual habitat. Inside the car park he handed over his keys to the valet, got out and entered the hotel through a side entrance. John took the lift to the fourth floor and made his way along the corridor until he found the right suite. He took the hotel key card and popped it into the slot.

‘Bingo’

Elated as he entered the immaculate suite, he smiled to himself.

The stink of urine and nicotine had battled the fog of detergent in the hot interview room that multiple scrubbing sessions and repaints had failed to remove. Kate, dressed in weird overalls, sat next to the middle-aged, hunched duty solicitor. Tired from the arduous photos, DNA, gunshot and fingerprint tests she spoke to him.

‘Where is my daughter? I need to know she is okay. She is going to be worried about me.’

She looked across the table at DI Sebastián Roberts’ expression. She was amazed at how quickly she had gone from wife and mother to just another criminal, as she raised her tone.

‘Where is my daughter? Could somebody please tell me?’

She noticed from the angle of his shoulders to his vein-free nose, he was self-disciplined copper that knew his fair share of low-life scum and was probably respected for it.

‘Please be quiet, Mrs Saunders, you will get your chance to talk.’

Taken aback, her eyes diverted towards the younger detective. Dressed in baggy pants he pressed the recording device that shrieked for far too long and pierced her ears. DI Roberts spoke.

‘Mrs Saunders, would you like to tell Detective Webb and me what happened tonight?’

She watched as he leaned in closer and Detective Webb flashed her a fake smile.

‘I don’t know what happened. I’d been out all day.’

She eyed the young apprentice, the master of two buttons, as he stretched back in his seat.

‘Mrs Saunders, we had a call tonight saying gunshots were coming from your home, and the sound of somebody screaming. Do you not know anything about that?’

She sensed he was all about business as he looked down his nose at her.

‘I went into town, done some shopping, stopped and had something to eat, then did some more shopping, and then stopped for coffee.’

She thought hard as she pieced together her movements that day.

‘So what time did you get home from this so-called shopping trip?’

Her mind confused, she didn’t want to answer any questions, as once again her thoughts turned to her daughter.

‘I don’t know what time it was. About eight o’clock I think. I’m not sure. Now can anyone please tell me if my daughter is okay? Because as I told somebody else, she is staying with her friend and is going to be very worried.’

She stared hard at Roberts as he turned his head and looked at his detective sidekick.

‘Don’t worry about your daughter, we have sent a WPC to the address you gave us earlier to inform her and check on her.
