Chapter Seventeen

Walking towards the exclusive Skyward restaurant along the pretty street with its perfect landscaping and elegant lamps, Lauren was reminded of the romantic dance scene in La La Land where the two main characters spoke briefly before saying everything they really wanted to say via the dance. She looked at the lamp post ahead. Why couldn’t she express herself in some way, in any way, to Rachel? If Rachel were here, would she be able to shuffle ball change along to the lamp post and swing round it before Rachel caught her? Would they spin, twirl and tap their way around the small squares of shrubbery built into the pavements? She shook her head; of course they wouldn’t; she couldn’t even tell Rachel about Parker’s barnyard disclosure. The only time she’d referenced it was to her horse, having gone back for another go with Wilbur. She’d been honest about how Parker’s statement had made her feel and what it might mean for the future, resulting in a rather fast trot around the pen; but it was yet another dose of reality to spike holes in her dream. Lauren knew she’d never put her own feelings ahead of her godson’s, no matter how much she felt like the ocean or the tides.

Huffing, she slowed her walk and lifted her eyes to the low evening light. Sometimes it really was rather ridiculous how lost she let herself get in the fairytale; as if dating Rachel was even a choice, and the fact she’d confessed everything to a great big Shire horse made it all so much worse!

“Finally she slows!” shouted Trudy, tottering along in the same bodycon dress from Tuesday night’s cocktail session, this time accessorised with a pair of skyscraper heels.

“Don’t be so raucous, this is the even posher part of town.”

“There’s no one around.”

“They’re being discreet, plus I’m never late to events.”

“This isn’t an event. It’s a double date and the restaurant’s just there.”

Standing still, Lauren waited for Trudy to catch her breath. Maybe if Wednesday night’s minibus ride home hadn’t been so full of laughter and wails from delighted children and adults she’d have spoken privately to Rachel. But everyone was so happy having connected with their animals that she didn’t want to dampen the mood. Plus Rachel was obviously an open and honest person, happy with her lot in life, because Wilbur had moved almost instantly for her. She clearly wasn’t pining or lost, or angry and confused; she was just Rachel whose horse immediately loved her. Not to mention that she could raise murdered week-old chicks from the dead. There wasn’t any reason at all to ask if she was okay. Just like there wasn’t any reason to ask if Parker was okay. Everyone was okay, and she would go on this date tonight and be okay.

Deep down, Lauren knew part of this evening was about testing the water. If Rachel was going to date someone new and Parker was going to struggle with that change, she wanted that person to be Jenny, not her.
