Chapter 7

Chandra couldn’t remember the last time she was this tired. She worked hard at the café, but between the miles walked, the snow, and all the adrenaline, she was fading fast. The heat of the surrounding water wasn’t doing much to help that either.

Shaking herself more awake, she tried not to focus on the fact that Jackson was so close by and that he made her feel things she thought had been long abandoned in her life. She wanted to know more about him.

“Is Beau your only son?” she asked.

A warm, rough laugh tumbled from Jackson’s lips. “No. Actually, he’s one of ten.”

“Ten?” Chandra gasped. “What?”

She tried to ignore the charm of his grin, but it was impossible.

“Not all biologically mine, but mine, nonetheless. Lisa and I got married in our twenties, and we had three boys. When my brother and his wife passed, we took in their three sons. Life came at us and dropped two boys in our lap who needed adopting, and we fell in love with them before we could think twice about it. And then two more additional who aren’t Princes but might as well be. They’re part of the family.”

“Oh my gosh. I thought I was busy with one daughter.”

“Yeah. I definitely stay occupied. They’re all somewhere in between twenty-five and thirty-five years old now, but I still feel like I’m running around after them half the time.” He chuckled. “But the light of our lives.”

Our lives. Married. He was married. Of course, she’d known that was probably the case, but the reality of her earlier thoughts made her blush.

She needed to shut anything else down right now. He was saving her life and nothing more.

“Sounds amazing.” She kept her voice light even though it felt like something inside her was cracking. “I mean, crazy, because…ten sons. But amazing.”

“It has been, every single day.”

Her heart cracked a little further. For the first time, she couldn’t deny that she’d moved back to Fairytale at least partially because of this man. Not consciously and certainly not with any sort of plan, but he’d definitely played a role.

But she wasn’t going to make any sort of move on a married man. “I’m so happy for you. That your life has been so full.”

He slid slightly deeper into the water. “Thank you. I love my boys. I’m trying to spend more time with them now that their mother is gone. Keep us all together.”

“Oh.” Chandra closed her eyes, unsure whether to be sad or relieved. He wasn’t married. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

She found she meant those words more than she thought she would.

“Thank you. Five years ago. Cancer. Lisa was an amazing woman. Losing her was tough.”

Of course she was; nothing less would do for Jackson Prince.

Chandra nodded. “It’s not the same at all, but I sympathize with thinking your life would go one way, when it actually went another.”

“What do you mean?” Jackson frowned at her, watching her almost too closely.

“I got married too young. Just turned twenty.
