The question of the predetermination of our lives is crucial to the question of man’s ability to learn, his responsibility for his actions and his ability to plan the future and to be creative. The questioning of free will is an extremely explosive topic and is discussed very controversially in various scientific fields. We would like to contribute to this discussion with a thought experiment: Admittedly, our present owes its existence to previously past events and actions. So a causal effect can be reconstructed retrospectively. For things have happened as they have happened. Can it be deduced that they had to happen in such a way that alternatives were not in play? Can the future therefore be predicted? Does the experimental arrangement of “the world” as it is now permit precise predetermination, determinism, of all future events? Could one not expect that a small piece of the future could be reliably seen from the causal specifications of now-time? The results of quantum theory suggest that a consistent determinism within the physically tangible world is untenable. Within the framework of quantum mechanics, only probability statements about future observations are possible, which means that the spatiotemporal behavior of a microphysical system is fundamentally indeterminate. Chance also plays an essential role in modern evolutionary theory.
