Chapter Eleven

Becky and Vlad arrived at the spaceport and went on board the new ship. They went to the bridge and found Top and Kit instructing an engineer on the wiring to the new control board located directly behind the two front seats. Vlad frowned and Becky said, “Oh, I forgot to tell you Top’s sister is going with us.”

Kit looked up and said, “I’ve heard a lot about you Vlad. It’s good to finally meet you.”

Vlad looked at Top and he said, “I’ve shown her the recording and she knows everything.”

Vlad looked back at Kit and she said, “You really didn’t have a choice, Vlad. If my family was put in that kind of danger I would have done the same thing. I do have one question, if you don’t mind answering it.” Vlad stared at her and nodded. “I understand you tried to kill yourself three times; why did you stop at three?”

Vlad stared at her and Becky shook her head, “You sound a lot like Pete, Kit.”

“Hey! Well, I must confess I wondered about that myself but decided to wait to ask,” Pete remarked.

Vlad shook his head slightly and said, “After the third attempt to kill myself, one of the technicians rebuilding my body told me that it took three people’s bodies to rebuild me. She laughed and said for me not to worry, they chose the best parts. I decided I wouldn’t try again unless I was positive of success.”

Everyone was shaken by Vlad’s comment but Kit said, “Bravo! That’s exactly what I would have done if I were in your place.” Vlad looked at her but she had turned back to the engineer, “You must have enough room in that conduit for enough wiring for the panel as well as the new monitor on the front bulkhead!”

The engineer stood up, “I need to go get another conduit.”

Kit immediately said, “Keep in mind you also have to provide enough room to also send a wiring harness to the stardrive as well.”

“Just how are you going to install that harness in the stardrive?” Pete asked.

“I’ve already built a new stardrive to replace the one that’s in place on the control panel,” Kit replied.

The room was quiet and Pete said, “Well, that pretty much shows she’s your sister, Top.”

Top and Becky laughed and even Vlad had a small smile. Kit turned to Vlad, “That idiot engineer bent this wrench.” She handed the wrench to Vlad and asked, “Can you straighten it out.” Vlad took the bent wrench, pulled on the ends, and the wrench was straight. Kit looked at it and said, “Where were you when I needed to straighten out my ex-boyfriend?”

Vlad actually did laugh this time and Becky decided she really liked Top’s sister. “Kit, Top tells me that everyone in the family calls you Cricket. How did that happen?”

Kit smiled, “When I was three months old, my mother told me she heard a cricket chirping outside and I mimicked it perfectly. Of course it wasn’t a cricket, those only exist on Earth but whatever made the sound, I could duplicate it.
