Dear Dad, Harriet, and Olive,

I won’t bother to tell you where I’m stationed, as I suspect the censors black out the best bits, but suffice it to say I can, on occasion, feel the breeze off the Mediterranean and catch a glimpse of its marvellous blue. Unfortunately, the view is dotted with warships, and the wind peppered with dust and smoke, but if I squint, I can almost imagine I’m here on my own terms.

When I do get home, you’ll not recognise me, I’m afraid. The pale skin of my English ancestry has crisped right up in the blistering sun of these dry desert countries. You’ll be further surprised to learn that I’m now both bearded and moustachioed, and I think the additions suit me rather well. Olive will likely disagree and be unrestrained in her mirth. I do miss her—and all of you. I’m certainly eager to meet her captain Aldridge. He and Jonathon are no doubt bearing the brunt of her boundless energy and enthusiasm in my absence. Poor chaps.

It’s unlikely this letter will reach you much before Christmas, and so I am already feeling homesick as I consider my second holiday away from you. There is something so cosy about Pipley in winter. So cheery and warm. I don’t doubt we’ll be carolling and drinking toasts, celebrating in our way so far from home, but it won’t be at all the same as donning paper Christmas hats and watching Kíli prance with excitement as Olive and I fence with umbrellas for the first chance at the Christmas pudding. I will be with you in spirit, praying for an end to this filthy war so that I may be home with you again.
