A week later her beloved returned from Town bringing his grandmother. The old lady was invited to dine with them and Frances knew herself to be found wanting by this aristocratic old lady. She was relieved to be able to stroll in the garden after dinner leaving the older ladies to talk together. Grace had gone to stay with her sister which made things more comfortable for everybody.

‘I can’t believe that you managed to locate both Leo and Adam and that they’ll be here in good time.’ The two puppies were dashing about in front of them making them both laugh. They were already answering to their names and would sit and stay when commanded.

‘I’m impressed, sweetheart, that you’ve been able to train those two puppies so well. I’m assuming that you’ll want to bring them to live with us when we return from our trip. I haven’t had a dog for years as Lydia, my first wife, had a morbid fear of them. I’m looking forward to having those two as part of our family.’

‘I suppose Leo and Jessica will go away again after the wedding – it’s very kind of them to come so far just to attend our nuptials.’

‘Actually, I gather that there’s an urgent business matter your brother has to attend to before they can resume their travels. At least the new, young Mrs Somiton can now have more input into her own home. Which brings me neatly to something we need to discuss – you must come to Renshaw tomorrow and tell my secretary exactly how you want things. The house will be redecorated and refurbished in our absence. Fortunately, my grandmother lives in a separate wing so won’t be disturbed by the work.’

‘What about Adam? Is he happy to return prematurely from Ireland?’

‘I’m surprised that you haven’t asked what was his response to my request to marry you …’

Her hands flew to her face. ‘My word, I’d quite forgotten about that. Surely he raised no objection?’

‘His letter was brief; he gave his permission provisionally as he wishes to speak to you in person first.’

‘I told him that I had no intention of marrying you or anybody else scarcely three weeks ago so obviously he’ll want to be reassured. Once I am safely married, he only has Grace to find a husband for and then he’ll be free of his responsibilities as a guardian.’

‘I’m assuming that he’s no longer involved with the lives of the other two girls.’

‘That’s correct – I think it quite possible he no longer intends to give them a dowry either but I’m not certain about that.’

They continued their walk about the garden and she pointed out the roses that would be picked to decorate the house.

‘About that, my love, I was wondering if it might be better to transfer the wedding to Stodham Abbey. With the building work going on here I don’t think you’ll have enough accommodation for everybody who will be attending and need to stay overnight.’

She counted on her fingers.
